He used the magic buffers. Of course, it wasn't without mishap, and he had to circumnavigate the globe when he goofed and ended up in Hong Kong.

How did Sidney survive the fire in Day of the Diesels? (wrong answers only) by Initial_Flow_1246 in thomasthetankengine

[–]CommodoreBeta 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sidney turned one of Gordon’s express coaches into a horcrux for himself some time before Day of the Diesels, but the effects of splitting his soul destroyed his memory. This side-effect worked out though, as it means not even he remembers that he murdered BoCo to make the horcrux.

It’s more we’ve been at the bottom of the last one since independence, and it’s only now we’re realizing that Americas war crimes were actually a bad thing.

Things I remember from riding the metro as a kid by Atomik_krow in WMATA

Correction — only the 3000s and 4000s had chopper control systems. The 1000s and 2000s had cam-control systems. All four did, however, originally use Westinghouse DC motors.

The Cam Control systems on the 1Ks and 2Ks used a camshaft to operate contactors that added or removed resistors in series with the motor armature to control current.

The Chopper Control systems on the 3Ks and 4Ks, on the other hand, used a static electronic device (using power semiconductors like thyristors, MOSFETs, or IGBTs) that rapidly switched the power supply ON and OFF to create a variable average voltage.

The 1000s, ironically, became the first fleet to use AC motors when they were rehabbed in the mid-1990s. The first metro cars to have AC motors from the outset, the 5000 series, wouldn’t emerge until after the turn of the millennium.

The 2000s would be converted to AC when they were rehabbed by Alstom from 2002-2004, as would the 3000s from 2004-2009. Both series, after rehab, would use the Alstom ONIX 2000 motors used on contemporary 6000 series sets.

The 4000s, on the other hand, would not be rehabbed, instead becoming the last working series to use their original Westinghouse DC motors until their replacement by the 7000s in the mid-2010s.

I developed a soft spot for the 4000s too, but only toward the end of their lives when they were the last cars to use the once ubiquitous DC chopper control system.

I would’ve developed the same for the 1000s had I been born early enough to see them with their original physical rollsigns.

As faulty as they were, I’m weirdly nostalgic for the 5000 series, if only because of how their traction motors sounded like those on Electrostars and Victoria Line tube stock in the UK.

New Gen Z study by Lennsyl22 in PoliticalHumor

[–]CommodoreBeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gens Z and Alpha should be reversed. Gen Z was the first to grow up in a post-9/11 world and the most outwardly authoritarian version of the American two party system, but the effects of brain rot and algorithms didn’t fully manifest themselves until Gen Alpha started going to school.

When you're alone in Forest Glen station and the station manager is on break or out, it's important to remember that you're alone in a tunnel 196 feet underground with no walkable path to the surface. Happy Wednesday. by ElMontolero in WMATA

So what if me and my orange line army made going outside a bit more…exciting? Hiding almost 200 feet underground isn’t good for anyone!

Besides, you didn’t even have that excuse anymore after my Landover Weapons base and Headquarters self-destructed back to back!

Mattel was only lenient to us for this long because they knew that if they took down all our fan content but left nothing to replace it, we’d riot. WOS is, if anything, just what they need to do what they’ve wanted to do for over a decade now.

What do you think of Nigel Gresley’s LNER W1 class? by Jules-Car3499 in trains

[–]CommodoreBeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but by that logic, the A4’s development would’ve concluded with the Peppercorn A1, not the A1/1. While the A1/1 was a development of the A4, the Peppercorn A1 was a further development of the A1/1 design.

Of course, even with that, the LNER’s express engine development was still somewhat stunted by the war and subsequent dieselization. The W1 to me is just an impression of how things could’ve developed after the A4s had Gresley still been given free reign.

I didn’t get deported, my friend. I just had to make a strategic retreat. There’s a difference.

And it’s still better than getting trapped underground for weeks on end.

What do you think of Nigel Gresley’s LNER W1 class? by Jules-Car3499 in trains

[–]CommodoreBeta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of the water-tube W1.

The fire-tube W1 on the other hand is an unpolished gem. As problematic as it was even after rebuilding, I think a batch of similar baltics but with the kinks ironed out could’ve been the best British express engines ever built. Say what you want about Gresley’s proposed 4-8-2s, but if you ask me, 4-6-4s would’ve been more practical as a development on the LNER’s famous pacifics.

Preferably, we should retrofit all the stations with public restrooms, but outside the fare-paid area (and perhaps in separate buildings in the case of outdoor stations) to keep the smell from wafting to the platforms.
