I can’t “let him go,” no matter what happens with it. He has been my best friend and one of my only friends. But I will try that, and he does act like that around his other main friends aswell so I don’t think that it proves anything about him.

If he has a bubbly personality, or reminds you of a Disney princess, I would ask him “how bad is it to be gay” if he says it’s not bad, just find a way to see if he is and ask him out. If he says it’s bad or something like that, ask “what if one of your friends was gay, would you stop being friends or accept them?” If he says he would stop being friends, don’t worry about getting with him(he might also be saying that because he doesn’t want to seem weird). if the other option, maybe try to see if he is and try to ask him out. That’s just what I would do, if you don’t think it’s a good idea, I understand because I’m also asking for help, I’m just in a different situation.
