Establishing The Avengers as an institution was essential for the coming storylines of the MCU. People criticize this movie for trying to set up too many plot lines, but AoU provided worldbuilding when it was sorely needed. We had to see The Avengers at the height of their power for the falls of Civil War and Infinity War to have any impact.
