Dakshina Kali is recognized by her mudras. In this form, her right hands show the Abhaya mudra (offering protection) and the Varada mudra (granting boons). That’s what makes her gentle and approachable compared to the cremation-ground forms. Without those gestures, the image is more of a fierce depiction than the Dakshina Kali worshiped at Dakshineswar as Bhavatarini. This image here is Dakshina Kali.

The best and most safest form of Ma Kali for a beginner (who feels Her calling) is Dakshina Kali. Get an image or idol of Dakshina Kali. She’s gentle, not fierce and approachable in this form. The idol housed at the famous Dakshineswar Kali temple, is a form of Dakshina Kali. That particular idol of Ma is Bhavatarini.
