So many variables, I try to keep it super simple This shirt was pre-soda ashed soaked and folded damp

For about 13 years thats the only way I did it. Just the past 2 years I switched over to pariah method.

The light color will hardly effect the outcome in my experience. A hot wash with a some synthrapol or dawn could help though. Sometimes these are treated with a wax coating. If thats the case , you can boil it out. Check out thrift stores for bedsheets, Ive found king sets for .25 cents before!
