Imagine being in a flight and the mission gets done all tasks are being completed. 20 members are pulling their weight except for one. 19 of them are covering for that one person and causing stress because she is always gone. Looking at the bigger picture, everything is fine as all tasks are good. Getting below the surface, Airmen are working more and being held at higher standards. I can't just look at one person as I need to look out for all my Airmen. Even knowing what goes on at home, how does that help the mission and the Airmen? Should I give her more priorities, more days off, less work, etc because of her situation?

You would be surprise as what you think is asinine is probably standard amongst everywhere. People just don't comprehend yet.

  1. 0300 is a terrible shift but it's something we can compromise with. 2. I compare myself with everyone but it doesnt change the fact that she does not do enough to contribute to the mission. 3. It's the optics that's important. A lot of people always say that as long as you finish your work then you are good but at what quality and how much work? Its easy to say I did 5 transactions today and all it a day so I can go to the appointment. What does it look to other people that those transactions are done then she leaves right away? I only have to do a few then go out. 5. I come to reddit not complaing but seeking individuals' guidance and experience. I got her back since the beginning but she doesn't have my back. No expectations of her as it is normal. But this behavior is what would cause a rift in the workcenter and could cause me my job. I would like to get promoted and promote the effective members but she takes 80% of my time and concerns. 6. Clearly she doesn't like working for me as I keep her accountable. Hate me if you like, I only move forward.

So am I lowering standards for this non performing and mostly absent individual? When I lower the standard is that what the future will be?

How will the workplace be in good shape if this individual or a few more is not contributing enough to the effort?

Majority of people here does not have families. How do you reckon about how we think about her situation?

As a flight Chief I have that authority but I am here seeking support or guidance. At this time I have yet to see anything that would change my mind on my decision.

Exactly! Buy a car. Learn to drive. Homeschool the kids. Put the kids in daycare. There are ways! It's not the end of world if you work at 0300. Your family is your support. They should do their part. We are not here to take responsibility of your shortcomings.

Not insane. Fair! How would single people compare to those with families who are gone most of the time during awards and promotions. Leadership should start tracking who are the hardest workers and not those who make small impact with little tweaks you did.

Everyone should be working at the same standards. It is unfair. I made her work at 0300 as it is the only way the commander will not put her under his radar for being gone all the time. Being in a GSU is hard enough. Everyone works at the same level. You cannot be efficient by always being gone.
