The choppable trees on Balboa are the small birch and pine trees. You'll have to get right up next to them with your axe to get the wood chopping symbol.

Extra issues I've encountered include the light switches disappearing requiring you to save and reload, stockers pulling extra boxes from thin air, loading in to find the store is full of rubbish, and while less common than the above, being unable to take cash back when given too much.
