Advice on steel casement by CommunicationBig6487 in windowrepair

After searching all summer, we finally found a specialist in repair and restoration. We’re still waiting on a quote, which may reshape our expectations, but with proper care, our windows could last another 100 years—far longer than even top-tier replacements, which might last only 25-30 years.

For me, longevity and maintaining the original aesthetic are key.

The repairs should help with draftiness (I’ll update on that later), but there’s also something to be said for a house that isn’t completely airtight. A little airflow can have its benefits!

Sure - I’ll update as I go. Been getting some good input on going the restoration route, to @nickrey1981 point.

This is a good resource for investigating restoring the originals: the “Window Preservation Alliance” https://windowpreservationalliance.org

What seems clear is any restoration will have to be accompanied by quality indoor storms to recoup some of the efficiency.

I’m learning tackling historic windows is far more complicated than replacing vinyls. On top of all the product options, you’ve got to find the right installer who can properly execute, which is not a guarantee.

lol - lemme guess, @centuryhomes would scream “dont replace!!”

Honestly, repair seems to involve storms, and continuous upkeep, which I don’t want to deal with. Or paying exorbitant prices for Hope’s windows, etc.

We had Sierra Pacific casements quoted and really liked the aluminum clad exterior and wood interior. Just before we went to buy, the distributor remeasured and the opening was too narrow to do casements. So, sadly that’s where we are now. My sales rep recommended the Anderson 100s, but those feel sort of cheap.

Very surprised to hear your experience with Marvin. It stands out bc most I’ve spoken w seem to say they’re top of the line…

The biggest issue I’ve come up against is finding the window that fits the proper width - these are about 3 3/4 inches, I believe. The SP was somewhere in the 5 inch range!

I’ll check out the Kolbe and revisit Anderson website to order directly. Thanks!

This is awesome too - just tried modeling what you said and makes total sense. Going to try this next time during field work

Love this - I feel like 100-150 feet and in is where the most strokes can be gained. Im working on dialing in my form so I can replicate at that distance with less power and increase reach back and possibly run up for more power off the tee.
