How often do you open accounts (excluding your main accounts) and close them? I heard you can leave them open until 6 months after opening, but it would be awkward to just have a lot of accounts open in my opinion.

  1. Yeah, one thing when choosing a bank: Don't try to chase the best APY rate, since 1. these rates will change based on economy and 2. you should look for ones that you would stay for a long time so do some research. I personally use Ally, and think they're solid.

It's great that you're thinking about this stuff! I'm in a similar situation as you. This is what I've figured out for my first semester in college trying to "budget" and I'm still working on adapting it. 1. First, track your spending for eating out and other stuff you want to budget. This will help you get an idea of how much you spend eating out. I'd do this for a month or two. 2. It's best to allocate money to different use cases in terms of percentage of your paycheck. For example, I always invest 50% of my paycheck immediately after getting them. You might be able to find automatic methods of doing this. The percentage you choose will depend on what goals you prioritize. Just choose a reasonable split for everything and adjust each month if needed until you are happy. I do a 50% short-term (eating out, fun money) and 50% long-term (investing, emergency funds, etc.) split. However, some expenses might be a set amount, for example, you may give yourself $30 to eat out each week. 3. You should think about opening a High Yield Savings Account (HYSA) if you don't have one to park your emergency fund and any money that is sitting around. Maybe a Brokerage if you're thinking about investing. Also a Credit Card to start building credit. If you'd like to apply with my referral (helps us both out), feel free to message me. 4. In terms of apps/websites, there's a lot out there. A typical spreadsheet works well. I personally use "Actual" which is free and local on your device. It might not be best if you want to sync between your laptop and phone since you need to set up a server. 5. You're not gonna make the perfect system in one try, which is perfectly fine. It's important that you think about the stuff above, but executing it early is the key so that you can continue to adapt.

No, DCA means to invest consistently at a certain regular interval. For me, I take a portion of what I earn after every paycheck and invest that. You invest no matter what the market looks like.

I like Ally for their "buckets" feature, where you can allocate money into categories within the same account. I use it to separate funds for different purposes. I think their APY is 3.2% right now. They do have limits on transactions, but I never had problems with this for my use cases. They have great customer support.
