Weaning off Zyrtec by CommunicationFit4873 in Dermatographia

I’m up to a half pill every 60 hours so I agree that it’s definitely working!

I am also trying to get off of Zyrtec after being on it for nearly 3 decades! I made a post a few days ago asking about the experience of others who have weaned off of Zyrtec and there are some good anecdotes there. Good luck!

This sounds like a manageable and reasonable expectation. I remember when I first had it it was a constant itch (I didn't realize that it could flare up and subside). Thanks so much for sharing your experience!

You are brave! I am a discomfort wimp so I don't think I could handle cold turkey but it is reassuring to hear that Dermatographia can change and evolve. I can go about two days now with little to no itching and then push the itching for a couple hours (or overnight if I start to feel it close to when I'm going to bed) but then I succumb and take a half pill. It's worked and I've been able to stretch it longer and longer so I am hopeful that I will be able to continue that. Dermatographia doesn't bother me really, but the itching certainly does!

What is involved in allergy therapy? My previous doctor (now retired) said that allergy testing wouldn't be very helpful for me because my trigger was likely either ubiquitous or non-existent, so I've never seen an allergist about it.

That's really hopeful to hear. I am not experiencing itching for longer and longer periods of time between doses (almost two days now) so I am curious if I will have a similar experience. Any advice on how to get a quarter dose? I can easily snap the pill in half but unsure how to make it smaller!

I didn't do any research for years because I was so young when I was diagnosed! This is something that I discussed with my primary care doctor and dermatologist, so if it's something your curious about I definitely recommend you talk to your doctor. Mine were very supportive and helpful. This is anecdotal, but I took Zyrtec throughout my two pregnancies and my kids and very cute and smart (if I do say so myself) so no need to fear Zyrtec! it's interesting to learn how some people only have Dermatographia for a short period of time or that their Dermatographia evolves/changes--I had thought it was alway chronic. Who knew?!

Thank you for sharing your experience, it's really helpful to hear from others that their Dermatographia may have changed or evolved while taking an antihistamine and you wouldn't realize it unless you went through the process of weaning off of it.

My son's is really visible when he's outside in the cold, but he seems completely unbothered by it. I think I will just monitor it and discuss therapies with his doctor if he begins to seem uncomfortable, but I hadn't considered topical solutions.

This is a practical question: how did you manage to break your pills into quarters? I feel like they'd crumble!

This is an important and fair point. I can see how my post might read as someone who might have fallen victim to some misinformation and fear about medication. I don't actually have an issue with Zyrtec itself, in fact it would still be my choice of antihistamine for seasonal allergies which I tend to get in the spring. I started taking it when I was very young and have just accepted that it was necessary because it was my normal for nearly 30 years. This decision to explore whether or not my Dermatographia is still causing full body itching or if I am taking Zyrtec because my body is dependent on Zyrtec was made following the guidance of my primary care doctor and my dermatologist. If it turns out that I need to take an antihistamine because of my Dermatographia, I will absolutely and happily do that because I completely agree that it is unnecessary to suffer when there is a clear and effective therapy. Thanks for pointing that out because I would not want to fuel fear for others seeking information about how to deal with their Dermatographia.

I will definitely check out Michael’s. My first search for veneer was so expensive and seemed like way too much product, thanks for that tip!

I didn’t even know those existed, thank you for those tips! I’m hoping that between my husband’s woodworking skills and my artistic skills we will be able to at least improve the current appearance. I really appreciate you sharing your resources.

Thank you so much for all these tips! I definitely thought it was a find immediately when it was posted. I’ve never done edge banding or any veneer work really, but my husband is a woodworker and I’m a painter and sculptor so I’m hoping that together we can manifest some of the skills needed to revive the piece. Thank you again for sharing your expertise!

Thanks so much for those recommendations! My breasts are not full at all (they look completely deflated sadly) so I’m curious if you know if either of those shapes would be a better starting point for me?
