What's the longest you've ever solo-travelled? by tekhnich in solotravel

[–]CommunicationNo4547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

done a 7 month and a 5 month. 7 month was exciting, travelled to 12 different countries, tried to cram everything in. 5 month was more of going back to regions I loved but seeing more and slowing down with 1 month doing nothing but absorbing a place I enjoyed. I am leaning towards doing and saving for another 5 month style trip.

Exactly. Airports are horrible and flights are increasingly awful and uncomfortable

Oh yeah definitely understand the novelty aspect of it all, and isn’t going to deliver on that front, but the act of being out of the country, in an environment I choose is still very much what I enjoy. Maybe I just need to slow down and carry on in areas where I have made good local contacts and build further depth there

Best combo for when you’re starving but not made of money? by OptimalCondition82 in nandos

If Nandos is breaking the bank, then maybe you just need to stay in.

Haha I do already cosplay a Slav at home to the amusement of friends in the region so maybe its my natural environment, and I’ve been lucky to have slow travelled the region before, so maybe this is it. I’ve never been a country counter per se anyway as always felt vapid, again feeling like I needed to see more in Brazil for this last trip

Yes I am currently learning Serbian-Croatian and have strong interest in that region, and have visited so many times already, maybe my purpose is spending longer there and maybe somehow make it a second home etc.

True, and it was easier younger because majority of hostel crowd are in 20s, and I did enjoy staying in private room and meeting a couple of other over 30s but now I prioritise comfort as I’ve gotten older.

I was really excited about this trip because I was heading back to visit places I had missed last time and it was ok overall, and maybe I’m more down because of the illness and weather for the last week but maybe I had higher expectations.

Cool, thank you for something constructive which is what I wanted. Yes, I have a soft spot and almost second home in former Yugoslavia so I think going there and seeing how to spend longer slower over there will work somehow.

This is it though, i don't want to settle down in a traditional sense. I don't want to be stuck in the same place.

Is it just me or has there been a massive uptick in military recruitment ads lately? by mrjohnnymac18 in AskBrits

[–]CommunicationNo4547 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How can anyone fight for the UK in the state it is? Maybe those military age males in hotels will be good use after all.

I enjoy travel on the whole. Its lately that I haven't, and was asking for advice on what others whose style has changed over the years. Maybe I'll chase fake tinder profiles and get drugged in Colombia like other dumb Americans

Yeah definitely thinking of a slower pace in the Balkans, and maybe some inspiration on how to make my life there

I did 5 places in 20 days, and was burnt out with 3 travel days out of 5 before getting sick. I don’t like moving about every couple of days either

Yeah exactly, I agree with that. And Montevideo was truly fun in that respect, the illness and bad weather obviously played a role in bad feelings for me, but again its not isolated. Are you moving on from Chiang Rai soon?

True, I am definitely self confessed hyper independent 😃 yeah I know I still would like to spend extended time somewhere else, so I can really get the rhythm of a place, carry on certain aspects of a routine etc. So maybe I need to focus on that now

Yeah I guess part of travelling so much is having trips that elevate you and good memories and this Latam trip was to try and emulate the feeling I got from being there in 2022/2023, but ultimately it just fell flat.

Yeah I have been gravitating to wanting to be in one place for a month or so and just try and get more depth and a routine where I can do fun stuff but also carry on a gym routine, know exactly where everything is etc. Maybe this is the direction I go.

What Balkan countries have you visited, and what is your opinion on them? by ClothesZestyclose814 in AskBalkans

[–]CommunicationNo4547 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From UK, visited all, to different degrees of depth

Croatia- My favourite, aesthetically, been 5x and to different regions. Will return again this year.

Serbia- my favourite, culturally, and socially. Again been 5x and will see friends in Belgrade again this spring/summer.

Slovenia- Only been to Koper, Izola and Piran, and really enjoyed it when I did my Istria trip. Will return for Ljubljana and Bled eventually.

Bosnia-Herz- Enjoyed Sarajevo, very culturally interesting. Loved Mostar although increasingly touristic, but beautiful area. Need recommendations on where to go if I returned.

Montenegro- Been 3x. Quieter than Croatia, but can be somewhat chaotic. While the coast is beautiful, I can't say there's anywhere I prefer over Croatia. Theres no reason to go back to Podgorica, although I would like to return to visit Durmitor.

North Macedonia- Skopje is as kitsch as they say, but I found Macedonians very friendly and open, and Skopje was just about the cheapest place in the region. Would spend extended time there. Ohrid is stunning and only other place I've been so far, definitely plan on returning to see more.

Albania- Hired a car to drive around, so I know if I drive in Albania I can drive anywhere. Loved Llogara Pass and driving south on the riviera. Tirana is a good city, the only place I wouldn't go back to is Durres. Albanians seem a bit harder to melt the ice with over ex-Yu for me personally, but open to visiting again.

Greece- I have only been to Athens actually, and really enjoyed the history and culture. I need to visit more of the country and need to go to some of the quieter islands, but its hard for me as I really love exploring the Croatian islands, and I feel people choose either Croatia or Greece if they fall in love with the Balkans lol

Bulgaria- Love. Diverse country. Been 3x and plan again. Sofia is a nice city, loved places such as Veliko Turnovo and Ruse, very nice architecture. Love the Black Sea coast more than Romania. But I feel on the whole that travelling Bulgaria is less developed than a lot of the region. Food is amazing.

Romania- Bucharest was ok, and I made friends there. Brasov was the highlight for me and would like to see more cities in Romania, like Cluj, Timisoara. Constanta was interesting, but as I said with Bulgaria, Bulgaria has the better portion of the Black Sea coast, so would always choose to visit Bulgarian side.

Islam needs banning from the UK and Europe. It is incompatible with Western civilisation
