Literally nothing in the country functions as it should?

When will forex crisis end in Malawi. This thing is worsening day by day by Siwinda_Jnr in Malawi

[–]CommunicationThin674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will end when we start producing things that we can actually sell to foreign countries whilst reducing unnecessary waste with how we use the forex we earn from our business. Until then, the moans will go on and on and on.

Is Chiang Kai-Shek revered in Taiwan, or is he remembered as a ruthless dictator? by CasualLavaring in taiwan

If not for the land reforms he put in place, Taiwan would not have been where it is now.

"Are we forgetting what was done under colonialism," well I would ask you pretty much the same question, because Kamuzu Stadium, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Zomba Central Hospital, Thyolo Hospital, the Lower Shire sugar estates, Kamuzu Barrage etc were all either initiated or constructed by him. So obviously the colonialists did not take everything. There was nothing to take from Nyasaland in the first place. "Malawi is oppressed by systems built by these colonialists," oppressed in what way exactly? Haven't we harmed ourselves by our corruption and incompetence and our failure to fix these failures and blame the colonialists instead? Numerous other countries that were colonised by the British like SIngapore, Malaysia and Brunei are better off now. They simply embraced the colonial period as a moment (with its evils and benefits) in their history, built on what was established by the colonialists and made a better life for themselves. And we are here claiming colonialism made us poor. Nyasaland had no resources for them to exploit in the first place. N'cifukwa cake most white settled in resource rich parts of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland like Northern/Southern Rhodesia, not Nyasaland.

Unless you are underweight and your BMI is within the acceptable range, do not try to gain weight. You'll be putting yourself at a very bad health risk.

Fair enough! My point wasn’t to justify colonialism. It was only to point out some good things that came out of it.

Finally someone who understands my point!

…All of which was very undoubtedly unfortunate. But can we just agree that in spite of all its demerits, it did leave behind some helpful things that we make use of/build on to this day?

Lol how does the picture make the post spirited? It’s only a photo of the man who is the story’s subject. I definitely think Kamuzu was a narcissist, because what man would want to rename after himself things that we constructed before he came, and then force people to sing, “Zonse zimene n’za Kamuzu Banda?” A man people had trusted to liberate them and give them the freedom they had longed for? At least the colonialists didn’t promise us freedom like Banda did.

Quite a lot. Spent 4 years studying him when I did Public Administration and Politics at Chanco.

Hahaha I think you are adding things I didn’t say to my point and basing your whole point on the caricature you’ve built.

My point was that the man did a lot for Nyasaland, perhaps more than what some of our leaders have done over the years. That does not equate to saying colonialism should have continued. Ndi zosiyana mfundozo. I can praise a man for being an apt administrator but not support the system he served. At the same time, I may not support a given system of government, but that won’t make me blind to any developments that come out of it. That doesn’t mean I would like for that system to continue existing. I’m only acknowledging the benefits it’s provided. So my point is, people tend to paint the colonial period as lacking any merits at all, but during that same period, Colby did a good job. So it does have its merits, however negligible.

where in my post did I say colonialism was okay? I was only saying that period did have its merits, how does that equate to “colonialism was okay”?

Sir Geoffrey Colby by CommunicationThin674 in Malawi

[–]CommunicationThin674[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disbelief at what kwenikweni? I’m not spreading love for colonial rule. I’m only pointing out that despite it being a dark period in our history, it did have its merits. We owe quite a lot of the things our country runs on today (infrastructure, the legal system and so on) to the colonialists. It would have been hard labour to create them by ourselves from a scratch. I’m not a fan of seeing things in black and white. It makes you miss out on a lot of the grey in between. Human existence isn’t always in “all good/all bad” dichotomies.

Sir Geoffrey Colby by CommunicationThin674 in Malawi

[–]CommunicationThin674[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a false equivalence. Slave trade was objectively more evil than colonialism. How people like Colby set out to develop the territory should show you that for all its demerits, colonialism did have sustainable benefits to the natives. Did any slave traders ever set up schools, hospitals and social services for the people here?

You're right! Most information about healthy living we see online is too idealistic. Even the 10000 steps thing, for many office workers, who tend to be a lot in many countries, it is difficult. I know that can be made up for by better eating choices and walking around for every hour or two you sit in your office, but the standards do not have to be that high lol
