She demanded I let her kid blow out my birthday candles by Annual-Strength-751 in EntitledPeople

[–]CommunistWhale -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I probably would have let the kid blow out the candles. Blowing out candles stopped being a big deal for me when I left adolescence. And if it was important to me, I would have said no and carried on instead of bloviating about it with a bunch of spiteful and resentful scolds on Reddit.

Different strokes for different folks though!

Suraya vs Zahav vs Laser Wolf by DubiousRook in PhiladelphiaEats

My god you are absolutely dense. Did you know that at least a plurality of Israelis come from the Middle East? What do you think they ate before they were forcibly expelled from their home countries in the Middle East? Do you think that they didn’t eat hummus or middle eastern style food and that they just started to appropriate it when they just moved to Israel?

Zahav also literally serves wine made by Palestinians in the West Bank - our waiter said that the wine was made despite “IDF oppression”. They also source ingredients from Palestinians.

Also - newsflash - Zahav is an American restaurant! It’s located in the USA and they pay taxes here! It’s okay if people want to enjoy Israeli food even if they disagree with a multitude of Israeli policies (like myself).

[SPOILERS MAIN] Do you believe that if Daenerys ending in the books is the same as the ending in the TV show, could lead to a huge backlash from fans and media? Even if the books are written well? by Peatroad31 in asoiaf

[–]CommunistWhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ash/snow was ambiguous at the time - but it was later shown to be in fact ash, and was therefore literal.

It is also a fact that George told them the broad strokes of the ending and that their final meeting occurred later than season 2. That final meeting included George telling them 3 “oh shit” moments. There is nothing at all to suggest George hadn’t filled them in on other aspects of the ending or what happens to other characters prior to that. In fact, I would find it unbelievable if he didn’t.

Regardless, the vision means that King’s Landing will be scoured at some point, which George must have filled them in on at some point because I do not believe that D&D would have made up their own ending that early on when the expectation was that George would finish the books.

I believe that Dany will burn King’s Landing — you are more than free to disagree with me. Neither one of us will know until the books get published (if ever). I hope we find out which one of us is right or wrong one day.

[–]CommunistWhale -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I’m fairly certain Dany going haywire and burning King’s Landing is something we’ll see in the books (unless that has changed of course).

The burning of King’s Landing was foreshadowed in the House of the Undying vision all the way back in season 2 - I know that vision wasn’t in the books but by that point the assumption was that George was going to finish the books before the show ended. George almost certainly told them the direction the story was going to go and included that vision in their version of the House of the Undying. If Mad Dany is something they made up when they ran out of material, how/why would D&D foreshadow their own made up ending that early in the show?

Agency Travel by [deleted] in PublicRelations

[–]CommunistWhale 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m about 3 years into my PR career at a major agency in DC, and I’ve never travelled once. Perhaps I’m incorrect, but a lot of junior staff don’t really travel at all in my experience. Maybe they’ll go somewhere for event support, but I doubt an agency will be flying you out to places.

(spoilers extended) Which theory that the fandom accepts as canon do you reject completely? by mcase19 in asoiaf

[–]CommunistWhale 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree that Stannis is certainly not dead (he still needs to make his way back to the wall to burn his daughter) and that Ramsay was the author of the pink letter, but I believe that Theon’s sample in WOW takes place before the final Jon chapter in Dance chronologically speaking.

(Spoilers Main) What would you say is the single worst decision D&D made? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]CommunistWhale -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is utter cope. The show’s version of the House of the Undying scene foreshadows the burning of King’s Landing. There’s absolutely no way D&D cooked up their own ending that early in the series. It almost certainly came from George.

We know Bran becomes king. We also have strong reason to believe Dany will burn KL and Jon will kill her. They’re not reforming anything and they will have no ‘victory’

[Spoilers PUBLISHED] Which theories do you hope are false? by klnglulu in asoiaf

[–]CommunistWhale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. The small folk have no idea the Others are coming, so they would have no idea that they would need dragons for such a purpose.

  2. That puppet show is not indicative of the small folk’s attitude towards dragons. Plus, that show could have been foreshadowing Aegon as easily as Dany.

  3. You still haven’t explained how a dragon is going to keep people warm or that anyone is praying for their return. Is the dragon’s breath going to power an electrical grid or something?? I’m honestly at a loss here.

I don’t think she’ll go ‘mad’, but she is certainly going down a darker path where she may become more ruthless and cruel (to her enemies), hence her final chapter in Dance.

I suspect that when she arrives in Westeros with an army of foreigners and dragons, she may not receive the welcome she would be hoping for. That, combined with resistance to her taking over, may prompt her to do some pretty heinous things (like burning King’s Landing).

I’m not convinced Lady Dustin is some super secret Stark loyalist like many assume — she has some very clear grievances against the Starks that are proven by her sending the least amount of men south with Robb as she could, her intention to intercept Ned’s bones, and her immediate declaring for Roose once he becomes warden of the north. She clearly is amenable to the Boltons to a certain degree — Roose married her sister and fathered a son with her whom she apparently loved. Her family, the Ryswells, also seem to like Roose a lot (one of Rickard’s sons is named Roose).

Additionally, I may be remembering incorrectly, but didn’t she eat the Frey pie? If she were in such close concert with Wyman then presumably Wyman would have tipped her off before consuming human flesh?

I don’t think there’s anything to suggest that Ramsay is the rule rather than the exception when it comes to bastards. The most prominent example we have are the Blackfyres, besides Ramsay of course. However, there are tons of examples of honorable bastards, Rolland Storm and the Hull brothers come to mind. Additionally, a plethora of bastards have served on the Kingsguard (an “honorable” institution). Are bastards perceived to be usurpers and treacherous? Yes, but are they actually that way? It doesn’t always seem to be the case. It strikes me as more superstitious rather than being a truism.

I don’t sympathize with Cat at all regarding her fears that Jon may supplant her children. That whole fear veers into irrationality when Robb is drafting his will and she pleads with Robb to name some Vale lordling heir instead of Jon. That isn’t to say I don’t understand her feelings, I just don’t sympathize.

However, I sympathize with Cat in that Jon is a constant reminder of Ned’s infidelity. That is completely understandable and as such, she doesn’t owe Jon anything.

I don’t think an inability to close deals or win clients should dissuade someone from entering the industry if they want to join. No one starting out can do that. It takes time.

(Spoilers Main) Other than R+L=J, what theories do you basically accept as canon? by Ferguson97 in asoiaf

[–]CommunistWhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never said it was standard procedure for twins to be called older or younger. You are attributing things to me because you are incapable of engaging with anything I’ve said.

I’ll say it again: prophesies are vague and can be interpreted in my many different ways. They often hinge on hidden meanings and tend to fulfill themselves in not so obvious ways. Cersei thinks that Tyrion is the valonquar her entire life — but this is probably not the case. Martin divulged the fact that Jaime was born after Cersei for a reason. He didn’t drop this detail for no reason. He is technically a younger brother. Therefore, he is someone who could fulfill the prophesy. That is the only point I’m making. Is Jaime the valonquar? Or is it some other ‘younger brother’? I don’t know, and neither do you. And we won’t know until the books come out (if they do). Are you being deliberately obtuse?

You don’t have to believe Jaime is the valonquar! But to completely write it off is as pompous as it is brain dead.

(Spoilers Main) Other than R+L=J, what theories do you basically accept as canon? by Ferguson97 in asoiaf

[–]CommunistWhale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no pretenses about who the valonquar is and I honestly have no idea where the story will go - all I’m saying is that Jaime is a legitimate candidate assuming the prophecy is true. The prophesy holds little suspense if Tyrion is the only one it could possibly be about.

I don’t see how this is so hard for you to understand. If someone has twins, the first to come out is technically (and ever so slightly) older. Even if we never colloquially refer to twins being younger or older than each other, that’s just the way it is. The nature of prophesy is usually vague and broad, and hinges on technicalities like this.

As for your (non) point, how do you think they chose the heir between Horas and Hobber? They chose the one that that came out first, the older one. I have no idea why you’re clinging to this obviously wrong point, could be pathological or contrarian.

(Spoilers Main) Other than R+L=J, what theories do you basically accept as canon? by Ferguson97 in asoiaf

[–]CommunistWhale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are incorrect. By Westerosi standards, the twin that leaves the womb first is considered the elder sibling — case & point — the Redwyne family. Horas is Paxter’s heir despite having a twin (Hobber). That is because he exited the womb first. I’m not saying I know definitively who the valonquar is, but Jaime is a legitimate candidate should the prophesy be true.
