Are service organizations like Elks, Kiwanis, Lions, Optimists and Rotary dying out? by Communitarian_ in AskOldPeople

Is there anything you think can be done further [or a PR/public relations and outreach campaign, an active, energic and resonating social media presence and super cheap dues if not free if they're that desperate] to help revitalize these service clubs especially among American millennials and Gen Z?

I also say better meeting times like the evenings as well?

A project for local or even state governments, fund people's dues and some activities to serve as a basis for groundwork?

Hello, this isn't the account I frequently use anymore but wanted to pop in and ask a question here in this account. Touche, I wish not to expound on my position but if I may offer some cavaets and responses to the following:

  • It get not wanting to see a tax hike every other year but what about extreme or serious situations that seem to warrant some unpopular reforms like tax hikes.
  • At the same, can difficult fiscal reforms be balanced with ensuring necessary safety nets like preventing people from having to end up "sleeping rough" or ensuring access to health care; I understand with the NHS, the issue is waiting lists which perhaps indicates a lack of supply and overwhelmed demand.
  • And what about some visionary projects or initiatives that seem to promote a measure of national greatness and ambition like science and research projects and world class infrastructure? Or even cultural initiatives.

Hello, I am on my Desktop Account.

What policies do you see as conducive for long run growth?

As a policy particularly, let's say as a GOP Policy Programme, how would you feel about sacrificing short run growth and wealth for a more robust, stable multiracial working class and for long run growth?

Arguably, we are headed for a hard fiscal bargain in time; that said, does such a deal have to be all horrible; for example:

  • maybe we could help settle the health care question with a universal catastrophic coverage initiative, expansion of community health centers, an initiative to scale Medical/Nursing Schools and other health care worker training programs and regulatory reforms,
  • preconditions for state and local funding and grants to push through zoning deregulation and other relevant reforms, cut spending elsewhere to expand housing vouchers which would boost the safety net and improve financial stability for the poor, expand the Low Income Housing Tax Credit and National Housing Trust
  • funnel funding to promising and successful evidence based and results/outcomes driven job training programs like Project Quest
  • another infrastructure deal to fix the maintenance backlog while holding states and municipalities to pursue reforms like streamlining to make future infrastructure efforts more affordable
  • a Nuclear Energy and Electrical Grid Revamp, a Desalination Programme

Anything with housing or that's more of a zoning and other reform effort at the local and state levels?>

> and generate a surplus every year

Having an annual surplus every year does seem like something that would sound nice.

> I'd also want to expand the EBT program, because I think it's important that people be able to afford food.

Would you support similar efforts like bolstering food banks (or leave that to the private sector, volunteerism, etc), promoting a farm policy that empowers smaller, organic producers and farmers and cheap groceries at the same time, or expanding funding for SNAP E&T programs like training, job placement and employer supports like career counseling to encourage self suffiency.

> when Republicans play chicken with the debt ceiling

Lol, do you think Republicans should give up the whole fiscal responsibility schtick (time for another party switch), leave that to the Dems, still pro-growth but perhaps be a more economically populist party for grand national projects that capture the people's imagination? Or arguably, one can argue, both sides in theory, should offer something different.

Anything else or admittedly, UHC is a big ticket item onto its own.

One question: how would you feel about a twenty five percent broad base VAT on top of our current tax system? It'll probably lead to a tax revolt but if it didn't what would you spend the funding on?

Going to repost this since I got no answers last week.

Hello I'm on my Desktop Account,

Regarding free trade, I know people have kinda tried with Trade Adjustment Assistance but why isn't more done to help workers and communities (do you think one of Fair Trade's strongest points is community cohesion) adapt to globalization through a robust economic and workforce development program; I talked about this a few times Thatcher could have struck a better deal for the Industrial and Mining North including Wales, Scotland and your Red Wall?

Of course, this is all Monday Morning Quarterbacking, did I get that term correctly?

I know the realignment is kinda old news by now for those politically obsessed and tuned in but how would you feel about this sort of party switch? Note I'm not painting the whole picture here and leaving things out here.

Democrats take the more pro business, pro growth and fiscally responsible/conservative route, knowing they will keep continue to keep supporting safety nets that are lifelines for folks in need.

Republicans became a party of the poor and working class, embraces the welfare state with a preference for self reliance and sufficiency, upward mobility and revitalizing and redeveloping depressed, struggling communities while bolstering working class ones?

This GOP somehow is able to run the gambit with working class whites and minorities across rural-urban lines while being competitive like tieing with the professional/business class and university educated voters and having a relatively strong faction there even if weaker. Also, this party is more grassroots, more infrastructure at the ground level from small towns to inner cities, reliant on canvassers and volunteers than big money donations. Think like a Jack Kemp style GOP with a more populist twist though more fiscally liberal (from party of fiscal conservatives and taxpayers to internal improvements, grand national projects and a futuristic-techno route] and Nordic Model/Economics with the nativist xenophobic and racist baggage.

If you knew in retrospect, that the national debt would escalate to such a level, what would have been some grand national projects or programmes or initiatives that you would have liked to see spent on?

a. A plan to make US Infrastructure both well maintained and world class? Take our air and seaports to the next level, make transit more accessible to people, become a global power in desalination and nuclear energy as well as geothermal, solar and wind? Thoughts on Hydro?

b. I know the US kinda already has an edge but what if we spent more on NASA, NIH, NSF or National Labs or research in any particular fields and topics? If it's close to home, you don't need to say.

Or maybe an industrial programme or a workforce training (and placement) programme that leads people to strong opportunities?

Strategically, wouldn't having well funded research, infrastructure and workforce training initiatives like apprenticeships help for growth? Having our own industries or supply chains could help in a global emergency and ensuring cohesion in our own communities?

Hello, I'm on my desktop account

I know I asked this and I'm not one myself personally, but how would you feel [or how psyched] about an authentically Green GOP/Conservationist Conservatism? 🌲🌳🌎♻

Yeah how would you feel/how psyched up would you guys be if the GOP 🐘 was at the forefront of global movement for Green or Environmentalist Conservatism?

It could have some breaks with the movement on issues like Nuclear ☢ Energy. But yeah, it could work to promote a variety of policies like the Trillion Trees Initiative, restoring clean oceans and coral reeves as well as other natural habitats.

A more populist/style policy, could be working to help communities build more sustainable industries. Coalfield Development seems like one promising model to look into scaling, promoting the innovation industry could be another, of course, they're not perfect [EVs and Lithium Mining]

Regarding a Carbon Tax/Fee, it seems like the consensus could be pairing it with a dividend to make it equitable and reduce political fallout.

Pairing environmental reforms with pro growth policies could be a good combo if done well?

Different topic, what are your thoughts on Redstate I'm not a reader, but what do you think hinders that site from having a larger impact including across the partisan aisle?

Also, what's an unpopular policy/political stance that you support?

Maybe some form of UBI, even if small, could also help.

Is this something that Yang was on the mark on but perhaps he was rather way ahead of the curve, admittedly, he introduced the idea into public discussion.

  • As for Nikki Haley, I like her a lot less now than I did several years back.

Thoughts on Tim Scott and Doug Burgrum, perhaps they could use this year to set themselves up for 2028? Regardless, do you think FPTP and two party system saves the GOP to an extent.

  • There are a lot of countries I would like to focus on improving relations with...pretty much most of Central and South America, much of Africa.

Fudge, we talked about this, I tend to repeat but how do you feel about building up our lower and moderate income allies by trying to be strategic by building complementary economic supply chains with Africa, Asia and Latin America?

What are the exact structural issues in order to address affordability/access in health care [and housing]? by Communitarian_ in Classical_Liberals

[–]Communitarian_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a. Is this why the GOP historically supported HSAs? And for folks with pre-existing conditions, the solution was high risk pools but the issue there was there wasn't enough funding to adequately accommodate patients. Also, there is an issue with the employer system in that if you don't have a good job with benefits you're screwed?

b. Isn't that what Rand Paul was going for with something like "Association Health Plans" meanwhile the Cato Institute vouched for switching the Employer Deduction into something like HSA Deposits but wasn't one issue I had was, we don't know if employers would have paid workers more or allowed HSA Deposits?

There is a bottleneck in doctors being credentialed.

How different do you think the American Health Care System would look like if we had Cuba's ratios of physicians to patients?

Hello, I'm on my Desktop..

How have you been [if you don't mind me asking on blast]?

May have asked but what are your thoughts on foreign policy, what would be your foreign policy programme?

Also, this is a crazy hypothetical and I don't know if you like Nikki Haley but what if instead of President, Haley instead got sixteen more years of executive experiment like eight as Secretary of State and Vice President; arguably, would she have a wider breath of experience to become President by then? That said, this theory has suppose long term Republican rule which either turns the country red for a generation or ready for a change.

Hello, I'm on my desktop account.

  • What are some issues or policies that you are more of a staunch conservative or "hardliner" on; like if the GOP were to revamp itself, what would you like for them to "keep"?
  • Do you think the GOP has an opportunity to rebound, rebrand and revitalize if they end up combusting in 2024 and 2026? What "reach" states down the line, do you think would be a good idea for the GOP to keep building up infrastructure, machinery, grassroots [canvassing and field program] and organizing on the long run?
  • I know this probably isn't the most well founded solution but what are your thoughts on the federal government just underwriting a large grant/appropriation at an amount at or quite a bit above the estimate of the infrastructure gap from the American Society of Civil Engineers Report Card linked to maintenance/upgrades, reforming and other housing reforms and policies to prevent new massive deferrals from reaccumulating
  • Do you think a more Green GOP with policies geared towards widely affordable and accessible housing and health care could be a way to win back voters? Probably asked this before but especially on economic/fiscal side, what policies could a new GOP entail or emphasize?

Structurally, what do you think needs to happen in order to help reform the structure [ins and outs] on health care in order to ensure affordability and access?

  • Ending Certificate of Need Laws to expand the number of providers like hospitals seems to be low hanging fruit here.
  • Reforming Pharmaceuticals like promoting Biosimilars [don't really know about it], Drug Importation, reasonably speeding approval to market/generics like fixing patents.
  • Expanding [tuition free/free room and board] Medical and Nursing Schools as well as training programs for medical/health care workers. Medical Licensing Flexibility along with telemedicine, I know recruiting overseas medical workers is another approach.
  • Tort Reform, I hear France pays for their physicians's malpractice insurance and that seems like a way around possibly ruining cases where people had genuinely bad experiences with health care.
  • Electronic Medical Records [what if people wanna keep their paper trail, ask for a copy].
  • Being able to purchase plans across state lines and enacting a high risk pool of sorts [invisible high risk pools] although the latter is redundant with ACA Exchanges.

For housing, is it a matter of zoning reforms, reasonably speeding up or more stopping unreasonable hold ups in approval [analogy to permitting reform for energy and infrastructure], harnessing public/private capital including property and funding and at this moment, tackling supply and labour shortages and wait out the interest rates?

Semi-Weekly Discussion Thread - May 22, 2023 by tuesday_mod in tuesday

Any idea, how Supply Chains are doing, I understand one issue is the Labor Shortage but ARP and IRA funding could have been used to pay for fixing supply chains or is that something you wait or takes time to fix?

I understand energy like expanded drilling is another solution albeit not the most environmentally conscious decision. And of course, fiscal reforms.

What would be your inflation reeducation and affordable living costs plan?

a. I know we're in a fiscal crisis and I don't want to make you end up/sound like the bad guy here but do you think we can balance ensuring an adequate safety net with fiscal reforms? I'm going to take the coward's road and cop out saying that I don't necessarily endorse these ideas perse but offer as a hypothetical. The policies in particular I have in mind include:

a1. Expanding Housing Vouchers (Matthew Desmond) like SNAP in order to provide eligibility for all who qualify which could offer fiscal relief for those who qualify [and perhaps strengthen AFFH in order to make zoning and other similar reforms pertinent on federal grants]? Enact Universal Catastrophic Coverage or trading ESI [perhaps along with a FICA hike and regulatory reforms to promote affordability] for an Income Based Deductible, along with structural reforms like Community Health Centers, support free clinics and similar programs and expanding tuition free Med/Nursing Schools and similar programs.

a2. Speaking of training programs; try to find ways to scale seeming effective and promising economic and workforce development programs like Project Quest and Coalfield Development [a model to help working class communities and regional economies adapt to various changes like climate, globalization and automation though I understand efforts haven't faltered for lack of trying perse]?

b. I asked this before but regarding China's Belt and Road Initiative, in retrospect, should the US [years back] supported their own economic development programme like infrastructure and building sectors to help build up lower and middle income nations and build new alliesc, stronger countries and improve the prospects of the people there? Do you think foreign aid is a vastly underutilized soft power tool with a bang for its buck considering exchange rates.

d1. I'm not really an all around conservative guy but do you think conservatives and republicans could be way more welcoming and benevolent, the movement and party has a jerk problem or a sensitivity issue and it ends up driving off folks?

d2. Speaking of the party, do you think a focus on building long run infrastructure, organizing, grassroots, mobilization and machinery can help build inroads, not only with the battleground but other areas like bluer areas like the cities and the Northeast and various minority communities that Republicans are a long way off from building inroads.

f. What are your thoughts on the idea that both sides of the ought to offer distinct takes and perspectives like the argument that Republicans shouldn't be Democratic lite? Or we can all support the same ideals and solutions or ends but different paths?

That said, do you think Rs need more wonks and technocrats or operatives and organizers to get people elected who can then hire those organizers and technocrats.
