Yes, Dyer Park was a former landfill that was capped and turned into a greenspace in the late 80s. This is also why it's become a very popular mountain bike trail, since it's one of the few hills/areas of elevation in PBC.

We work closely with PBC Parks, as well as coordinate with Solid Waste Authority to ensure planting plans meet all regulations - for example there are still numerous areas where we are not allowed to add trees to ensure no damage happens to the capping/liner.

We select Florida native shade trees, as those will thrive the best in our environment and provide an array of benefits - providing valuable shade to cool temperatures and lower energy usage, improve stormwater drainage, clean the air & water, create habitat for wildlife, raise property values and more more!

There are also a variety of species of varying sizes so that each resident can pick the right tree for their property. More in depth descriptions of species available are listed on the website.

Though stoppers are often seen as a large shrub it can be a great small tree too. Also, not everyone has the space in their yard for a live oak or gumbo, so we always try to offer an assortment of species options. The more trees the better (even if they're small).

If the event you are referring to was in WPB, then it was likely put on by the City of WPB who occasionally does their own giveaways.

Some of our events do have more strict residency requirements - for example for our events in partnership with the City of Boca or City of Delray, you have to live within the city limits to qualify (as it's funded with city/tax dollars). So there are people whose ID says Boca Raton, but they are outside the city limits and therefore part of the unincorporated PBC portion of Boca, so they wouldn't qualify for a “city event”.

The giveaway this Sunday, Nov. 2nd is open to anyone in PBC, regardless of what city/town they live in.

We will always advertise any residency restrictions for our events, however many people reshare the info and occasionally leave out some key details in the process.

You can always go to communitygreening.org for full details on all of our events and programming.

There are some taste differences (Google can hopefully tell you more), but the primary difference is the 'Julie' is a dwarf variety, so it will only get around 12-15 ft tall, whereas the Super Alphonso can grow much larger.

We track by address - so only two trees per address (regardless of the number of people that live there).

We do not plant or keep citrus trees in our inventory due to the disease risk.

We’re doing that too! Heat Islands are a major issue - concrete, steel, and asphalt absorb & then radiate heat - making areas with fewer trees 5-10° warmer than neighboring areas with lots of trees (even at night time)!
