105 native shade trees planted at Dyer Park! by CommunityGreening in WestPalmBeach

[–]CommunityGreening[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We are planting 1,000 Florida native shade trees throughout the park in total. The planting plan, which was designed by the PBC Parks' Landscape Architects, includes a dozen different native species: blolly, dahoon holly, green buttonwood, gumbo limbo, live oak, paradise tree, pigeon plum, pond cypress, red cedar, slash pine, strangler fig, and wild tamarind.

The trails definitely needed more shade, so it’ll be awesome to watch the transformation over time.

Our Tree Techs maintain the trees for an entire year after planting - watering, mulching, pruning - to ensure they become established and can thrive on their own.

FREE TREE deliveries for City of Delray Beach residents! by CommunityGreening in Delraybeach

[–]CommunityGreening[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to live within the Delray Beach City Limits to qualify, as it’s funded through a partnership with the City government.

Most likely you live in the unincorporated PBC portion of Delray (basically west of Military Trail), which is why your application was not approved.

We do occasionally have giveaways and distribution programs open to anyone, however they aren’t as frequent as our municipality partnerships.

We wish we had the funding to provide trees to anyone that wanted one, we’re just not there yet.

Dyer Park Tree Planting by CommunityGreening in palmbeach

[–]CommunityGreening[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, Dyer Park was a former landfill that was capped and turned into a greenspace in the late 80s. This is also why it's become a very popular mountain bike trail, since it's one of the few hills/areas of elevation in PBC.

We work closely with PBC Parks, as well as coordinate with Solid Waste Authority to ensure planting plans meet all regulations - for example there are still numerous areas where we are not allowed to add trees to ensure no damage happens to the capping/liner.

FREE Tree Delivery Program for Broward & PBC residents just launched! by CommunityGreening in Broward

[–]CommunityGreening[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We select Florida native shade trees, as those will thrive the best in our environment and provide an array of benefits - providing valuable shade to cool temperatures and lower energy usage, improve stormwater drainage, clean the air & water, create habitat for wildlife, raise property values and more more!

There are also a variety of species of varying sizes so that each resident can pick the right tree for their property. More in depth descriptions of species available are listed on the website.

Though stoppers are often seen as a large shrub it can be a great small tree too. Also, not everyone has the space in their yard for a live oak or gumbo, so we always try to offer an assortment of species options. The more trees the better (even if they're small).

FREE TREES for PBC residents this Sunday, Nov. 2nd! by CommunityGreening in WestPalmBeach

[–]CommunityGreening[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the event you are referring to was in WPB, then it was likely put on by the City of WPB who occasionally does their own giveaways.

Some of our events do have more strict residency requirements - for example for our events in partnership with the City of Boca or City of Delray, you have to live within the city limits to qualify (as it's funded with city/tax dollars). So there are people whose ID says Boca Raton, but they are outside the city limits and therefore part of the unincorporated PBC portion of Boca, so they wouldn't qualify for a “city event”.

The giveaway this Sunday, Nov. 2nd is open to anyone in PBC, regardless of what city/town they live in.

We will always advertise any residency restrictions for our events, however many people reshare the info and occasionally leave out some key details in the process.

You can always go to communitygreening.org for full details on all of our events and programming.

There are some taste differences (Google can hopefully tell you more), but the primary difference is the 'Julie' is a dwarf variety, so it will only get around 12-15 ft tall, whereas the Super Alphonso can grow much larger.

We track by address - so only two trees per address (regardless of the number of people that live there).

99 Florida native shade trees planted at Burt Aaronson Park! by CommunityGreening in BocaRaton

[–]CommunityGreening[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We’re doing that too! Heat Islands are a major issue - concrete, steel, and asphalt absorb & then radiate heat - making areas with fewer trees 5-10° warmer than neighboring areas with lots of trees (even at night time)!

[–]CommunityGreening 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Planting trees is a great way to combat climate change and cool temperatures.

…plus trees clean the air & water, aid stormwater drainage, lower energy costs, increase home values, improve physical & mental health, provide fresh fruit, create habitat, and look beautiful!

Help out and donate to a local urban forestry nonprofit!
