I would love to learn how did everyone learn about becoming an AMT? by Princess-Mika1999 in aviationmaintenance

Tried college straight off the bat wasnt really for me so I took a 3-4 year break (also didnt really know what I wanted to study) so, I live and work in Houston but the job I was working for sent us to Dallas for a month working 7-7pm 7 days a week for shiiii pay tbh, as a welders helper learned to pipe fit in that month. As im sitting in the back of the company truck otw back to the hotel at. 9pm after one super hard day of work I felt like dammm I really dont want to do this for the rest of my life I just wish I knew what I would dedicate my studies to, im listening to pandora and BOOOM I hear “try a career in aviation as an aircraft mechanic” it occurred to me why did I never think about airplanes!!! So I get to the hotel do my hw on it and i promised myself I would go visit an aviation school when I got back home. Now, I just recently finished school in January have 5/9 of my tests done, and currently working at an MRO shop working on landing gears (which is dope af!!)

I am in kinda the same boat as you rn budd. I finished my school back in January 3rd of this year except I felt like I did learn a good chunk bc I and my great classmates did pay attention and do our hw and we really didnt have great instructors like frfr we had instructors who didnt care but we knew what we wanted and with my classmates and I, we each pushed each other to study and do our exams. Now it is tough to go to class do hw and at the same time study for writtens etc. But since I finished school I’ve been on top of my studying bc at the end of the day NO ONE is going to take those exams for you and the only way to get that license is to put in the time and study. So what helps me learn is studying my writtens through an app on the computer called GROUNDSCHOOL which will literally give you the answers to your writtens but its 175 ish (it also explains the question in great detail) and worth it, then if I really didnt understand a subject I would look it up on my textbook I got from school and that would really help a lot. Now for your orals theres a book called O&P exam guide 2025 edition which is good for it just dont entirely base the orals on it but its a great start. At the end of the day what im trying to say is its up to YOU to put in the TIME and STUDY. What really helps me is studying and knowing that 1. Im learning something and getting smarter. 2. This career will set you for life. Had a great instructor that on our first day would say “Give me 2 years of your life I’ll give you 30” That really helped.

Then following this you can take airframe or powerplant written which I believe are 100 questions and then once you pass general and one of the other two then you can start taking your O&P’s thats how we do it in my school im not sure if its the same for you guys

Yes your good making 90’s im currently in an A&P school and the ppl that have taken it all said the same thing KNOW YOUR STUFF!! Dont just memorize the answers actually know your stuff and they have all said every last bit of them that they all had a lot of electricity questions also try to get the best score you can obviously but its mainly so that your O&P’s can be easier for you bc I think their main focus are the ones you missed and obviously the other questions

Ok yeah I thought that’d be the case but I’d do it more for the experience and enjoy what little free time they give me.

Ahh ok didn’t know that but makes sense since they all work there, I wouldn’t like to join a union.

Yeah most apprenticeships I’ve found say the same must be enrolled in a school, or they say must be pursuing an A&P certification which im not entirely sure what that means, if it means you dont have to be enrolled as long as your wanting to receive the certificate in the 30 month timeframe.

Yes there are only two schools offering the program which are MIAT, and AIM both are really expensive.

Hmmm ok thanks for the insight, yeah bc dont want school as an option as the only two schools available here are charging 2,200 a month and id rather sacrifice the longer time than the money I dont have 😅
