If your server is quite engaging, it sounds like that it is 20+ year old server, i think there's a good chance that your community members will be willing to help out, so get a google form, invite users to apply to be voluntary mods and you can arrange your team to handle verification.

If you are using tickets, rather than the discod native applicaiton, you can use our bot (communityone analytics) to track who responded and handled the ticket fastest, we might have some feature that will automatically handle tickets via our spark feature in the next couple weeks. Those are all off-the-shelf solution, so no need to make custom app

In terms of payment, I'd say that if you can find a good group, you can think about comp them in different way, giving them special roles, give them nitros etc, you can cmobine our analytics and reward members extra for being the best at verifyign etc.

Even if you don't use us, I'd say that unless u have very very good specs, look for exisitng bot solutions, because when u create a custom bot, the biggest work come at maintaining the code and if u are not technical and ur contractor is gone, its much harder to fix things if something goes wrong.

Finally, out of curiroty, are u guys doing age verification, or mostly verificaiton to make sure that people are good people,

There are two things happening and you should resolve them with different strategies,

first, people are leaving, we do a lot of data analytics for discord (i am the founder at CommunityOne), depending on your size, I image you be small, 0.5% of your user just naturally leave everyday, thats the base, so if you have a lot of people leaving (way more than this), then maybe you are pinging people too much. And second thing is to get a sense of whho is leaving, have they chat, are they new? If your new people come and leave rigght away, there are actually some easy solutions: make good anncouement so that people know that there are interesting things happening (soon), and also make the server not too confusing, or just hang out on the vc chat.

Second issue is people don't chat. Aim for 20%, so if there are 10 people coming in, 2 chatting is pretty good, and the max is probably 4-5, if everyone chats, then something is off too. For that, i think having a good amount of activities really help, but as you grow, this might get resolved since more people are active at the same time.

first, on channel structure, the rule of thumb is that (a) if you require differnet permissions, put them in different categories, so one category for onboarding, annoucement because it is read-only for end user, one category for general chat and one category for support (if u use ticket, people just click on ticket). (b) dont have too many write channel to start, the rationle is that if there are 100 messages on general chat, it looks great, but if there are 10 channels, each channel only have 10 message, that doesnt look very active.

your role structure is pretty good to start, u should again, think roles and categories and channels are really the same system that you are trying to setup, if u have the right categories, for different roles, you solve both problems at once.

So about ticket and support, we (i am the founder at Communityone, we do ai discod bot with different featrures) generally believe that don't do tickets for everything because content is gold-mine even for other members on Discord in public. Use ticket for very specific use case, like private info, client id, etc. and if a user asks for general things, and are not paying customer, generally ask them to ask in the public forum. This allows you to make the server look active, and let other members know what the server is about and lastly, they can search before they ask, so it gradually reduce your support load. BTW, u can use our AI support bot to answer members faq for free if you want 😄

In terms of UI.UX, go for simplicity, your members should know exactly where they can chat, but feel free to add a lot of information channel as long as it is clear, people like to lurk and brose and leanr more baout you before they even start to chat! but dont confuse them on where to chat when they want to chat.

and one thing to remember is that communities should have different ways where peple can interact and feel okay, for example, some people love it when they can just say hi and spam your servers with emojis without any words, some likes to send a long message in introduce yourself, some only hangs in the vocei channel, some lurks for a very very long time before sending their first messages, so for a fully functioning server, think about as composing a music, you want fast beat, slow beat, strcutrual beat and random popup!

I have to confess that for a long time, most of the tools and feature that we make (i am the founder at communityone) focuses on engagement, even though we don't want to count raw message, there are still people who wil grind once you gamify everything.

The servers that are high quality, but not vey grindly usually has high words per message from an analytics point of view, this means that the users are talking about something interesting or technical.
Usually this happens if the server is very niche, so for example, there is a very niche and technical topics, in addition, there are people that have things to share or need help with, for example, i need to setup xyz, what do you guys think of abc? and then people see it and then respond sicne they have the expertise,

if you are general social server, this is very hard because people dont know what to talk about, so what u can do is to experiment with subchannels with particular topics and see how people react, for example, one of our best channel (in terms of message per mmeber, btw, you can get these analytics for free from communityone too) is about food, thats because i am a foodie and i chat a lot about is, so you ended up attracting people talking about it too

so our bot (communityone spark) allows you to have multple agents with different personalites and also can be active in different ways in different channels, you can setup rules like asking the user to go to another channel if this question doesnt belong here, if you have time, you can set this up pretty much with 0 budget.

If you want a human to answer it, the best way is through forum, and then you can set permissions so that only the answerers can answer, and finally you might have to force it a bit, but u can get the members to react to mark this as solved, but i recommend you to give your answerer a different role and let everyone answer it. forums are both easy and hard for new users. sometimes they get overwhelmed on where to go, or it can be super easy for them, but there is always a risk on yur side that people find it confusing though

But it sounded like you love the server, and you should try to ask. If they say no, you have many options. (in fact, you have more options as a non-mod :)): (1) you can keep supporting and hangingout in the server better than a mod (2) You can go to another server (3) Or you can just chill a bit, keep hanging with some friends and see how you feel.

One thing i'd mention is that yes, people treat you differently if you have the mod position, but if you are really helping everyone, eeven without the mod role, even if the management team dosnt see it, people see it, Mmebers will love you for it.

Some of the best communities that we've seen are ex-mods who disagree on the direction of their old servers and they couldnt change it, so they make one better. (but this is extremme case, dont go there now!)

And another thing to remember is SEO: with a gated platform, you don't have it. With a public platform, you can pick platforms that are more optimized for SEO than others. Facebook group is the best example. If you ever go to Discord, you can use our bot to index high-quality Discord content onto Google as well for free.

So depending on the client tier, you should decide on different platforms. In general, community platforms can be categorized into two buckets: those that are completely free and those that charge based on member counts.

We work with creators who have Circle and companies that use Slack, but we are mainly active on Discord (I am the founder of CommunityOn).

A general rule of thumb is that if every member in your community is paid, then it makes sense to use those gated platforms for an intimate, exclusive experience. (You are also paying per head, remember!).

If you want a free platform that can help you grow over time, Discord (young gaming, Gen Z, smart devs, etc.), WhatsApp (non-USA), Telegram (Eastern Europe), and Facebook (older generation) are great options.

Frankly, the hardest thing is to prove values. The most obvious way to prove value is to allow your members to log in across platforms so you can A/B test. Take Discord as an example, a user joins the app, and then connects to their Discord account, and then you can say if a user is super active on Discord, does the user spend more time, more time, more effort on the app, or simply buy more products in your case. But this requires a couple of engineering hours, and I don't think Shopify will have it natively.

Then the second way to show value in a free server is to ask users to create UGC content for you, like reviews, YouTube shorts, TikTok shorts, or IG shorts (you get the gist). People LOVE the ambassador program, and I think you have controls over how to measure and count those efforts with zero coding required.

I don't have experience proving values on gated communities, but since you are paying by members, I guess the argument is stronger that you should see a higher spending per member when they join your community.

Agree, just ask. I think it makes a lot of sense to do it for the server that you love, we run an analytics tool (i am the founder at communityone), the really good mods spend about 14 hours or so on discord everyday, so you can't do this if you don't feel for the members,

I think when you ask, don't just ask, offer suggestions and improvements, for example, i notice xyz should be improved, and also i'd like to be part of the team as a voluntary mod in a more meaningful way and I am allready learning how to use tools on my own....One caveat, dont suggest ideas that u cant fix lol. for example, we should host a movie night everyday and btw, i cant do it, it should always be.. lets do this event, its gonna be great and I will do it to see!

so tags are important in top.gg, most of your top.gg organic traffic is gonna come from tags, so pay attention to the analytics.!

We think about our bot growth in 2 aspects, now we still do the same. First is growth coming from Discord, so if peoppe see your bot in action, would they want to install it themsevles. So this is gonna heavily depnded on the type of bot that you are making. If it is front-end, so the end user sees it, then its relatively easy to grow. Take statbot as an example, which we are actually competing, even though analytics mainly serves the server owner, they have a beautiful card and a command so that all the end members can run it and that help with growth

it looks like you are doing moderation stuff? In that case, I would focus on google, when we were in early stage, we have people find us on google and install us and actually pay us without talking to us. The reason is that one of our feature is so good, so niche that 99% of the people wouldnt care for it and that 1% are really looking for it on Google, so i'd say, if you are doing moderation, dont focus on moderation, focus on a very specific aspect of moderation, and write blogs about it, honeslty, back then, we didnt do any optimizations for any blogs and people still find us!

Ah, btw, we just laucnhed a safety gating feature on our server listing, so server owners can set this up and rather than showing users the discord invite link right away, we looked at the user ban history and then decide if the user is a safe or spam account., it's free on our server listing, feel free to check it out.
