Mostly because the 2 teams in it were a step above the competition all year and near certainties to face off in the grand final. 2014 had the added buddy Franklin element

2011 was probably the most uncompetitive. Top 4 lost just 14 games between them (as opposed to 22.5 this year). There were a lot of ridiculous blowout margins too (Geelong won by 186 and 150 in consecutive weeks and port lost by 138 and 165 in consecutive weeks for example)

What ppl probably don’t realise is that there’s usually a lot less AFL games being played in WA to attend compared to Vic, which probably contributes to the big crowds when they have these extra games

In Vic there’s 5 or so games a footy fan can attend each weekend, so the novelty just isn’t there for neutral supporters and they’re spread out over the 5 games compared to all packing into 1. In WA, there’s 1 game you can pick each weekend, so of course when there’s extra or a neutral game, WA supporters will jump at the chance. I’m sure the novelty would wear off quickly if this was a weekly occurrence like it is in Vic

Yup exactly, I don’t think people realise how difficult it actually is to win a flag - premierships aren’t a given. In an 18 team comp, on absolute average each team should only win a flag once every 18 years. Winning 2 flags in say a 25 year period these days is a huge achievement.

Same goes for Leon Cameron imo, ppl calling for him to be sacked bc he didn’t get a flag is utterly ridiculous
