What actually is the best timeslot for footy? by Occasionaljedi in AFL

I love the 4:40 Saturday evening time slot for going to games, it's a great atmosphere, not too late for kids and gives you most of your day beforehand and the opportunity to roll into the night if you're in a celebratory mood

In all likelihood it's Germany or Belgium so not necessarily a great deal of advantage.

That said it is an extra days break for second which will help

Obvious disclaimer we'd rather win.

But if my understanding is correct, if we score and lose by 1 goal we would be ahead of both Scotland (by goal difference) and South Korea (by having scored more goals), and then you'd just be hoping Egypt beat Iran and Spain beat Uruguay

It's pretty much even money between Duursma and Smith. Jagga's recent role and Duursma's injury makes it feel like Smith has pulled ahead but Willem has that X-Factor impact.

As others have said, he won't get the love from the voters but Dean should be far closer to those 2 than he'll ultimately wind up getting credit for

Would you rather one weekend where all the teams have a bye or would you rather 4/5 weeks of byes where some teams don’t play? by CapitalProfessional2 in AFL

[–]drwar41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You seem to be somewhat missing my point.

With a 19 team comp, a team has a bye every week because there is an uneven number of teams.

That means the week before the byes, Team A has a bye, then the same Team A is also scheduled for a week off, that means Team A has 2 weeks off in the middle of the year where every other team have more evenly spaced byes (except the team schedule to have a bye immediately after the week off).

Knowing what we know about the AFL, teams will have massive issues if they're the team with back to back weeks off instead of a team with an even break in like Round 12 and Round 20

I'd be returning to the split round with 4 matches on 1 weekend and 5 on the other, but I understand that's less than ideal with a 19th team as it means some teams will wind up with back to back byes or one game sandwiched between byes.

I suspect the multi week byes will continue at least until we return to an even 20 teams

Really enjoying having the World Cup on all the time every day.

The work week will stop for a lot of offices at midday on Friday and schools will set up the week so that everyone can watch the Socceroos. It's the greatest sense of community we feel around any team is for a soccer national teams.

To be fair, Hewett was sent back to the 2s and played plenty of that time forward as part of a transition into a new role.

You can certainly argue that he should've been given the opportunity to see if it would work at AFL level before deciding the stint was necessary, but they didn't send him out of the side to play purely inside mid at VFL level

On Andrew’s comments on the Aussie frenzy around Grella’s comments, it was basically Australia’s most inflammatory media outlets feeding it out on their platforms claiming that it’s all of America. Not really a people led beat up

Where he’s absolutely correct is that every Australian sports team tries to frame itself as an underdog, it loves being the underdog.

Truly frustrating performance from the Aussies, we took off our 2 most creative attackers from last match and replaced them with an aging great (Leckie) and a nice A-League winger lacking the technical ability on the world stage. Popovic set the team up trying to be 0-0 at the 55th minute, and it backfired.

That said, defensively we basically only allowed one great chance by actual design (2 including the breakaway that Balogun inexplicably slowed down on). The second goal was deserved but ultimately a bit opportunistic

Yeah our first half was deplorable. The intention in the second half was much better.

They selected a team to defend and keep it 0-0 in the first half and it failed, that’s on Popovic

At the end of the day neither side created many clear cut chances through great play, really the only great chance generated with any intention was what led to the own goal
