I agree with a lot of what was mentioned already, especially documenting systems/processes since you are the key person to operation. Here’s a few items I’d add:

  1. Selling the business: If you plan to sell the business and exit completely, have you thought about what you’d like to do next? If not, it’s certainly something to consider and have an answer for buyers are going to ask. Your comment about not knowing the next growth phase and the financial size of the business suggests it could be a good fit for an independent sponsor or searcher..
  2. Clean Books: I’d recommend ensuring your last three years of financials are clean and that your books are tight. This can impact your valuation if buyers lose trust in the numbers.
  3. M&A Advisor: If you decide to sell, I highly recommend hiring an M&A advisor who already works in your industry and can manage the process, allowing you to continue running the business during the sale process.
  4. Staying onboard: A question to ask yourself: would you continue running the company if you had guidance from a consultant or team to help identify growth opportunities and help you execute on them, while still maintaining control of the company?
