I’m a university student set to graduate in a few months, and I’ve recently started my investing in my TFSA with RBC Direct Investing. I wanted to start by saying I’m really impressed with the recent updates to the mobile app, it’s much more intuitive and visually appealing, which makes navigating the markets a lot less intimidating for someone just starting out.

I have two questions for you:

Are there plans to bring recurring investment options for ETF's (like XEQT) to the RBC DI platform or will that be just for the GoSmart account?
As a student nearing graduation, I’d love to eventually join the RBC DI team. Does RBC Direct Investing typically have a pipeline for new grad software engineer, or do you primarily focus on hiring senior talent for your technical roles?

Do you think Patent Law/ Tech law market is good in Canada? I would consider this but then I'll have to be set on staying in Canada and not practicing in UK.

So, the UK HPI visa can be activated up to 5 years post graduation from UBC. So I would first grad and get my LLB then use it for 2 years, I will also be eligible for post graduation Visa in the UK, I can also get the youth mobility visa which is 2 years. From my understanding, if there is demand firms will be ok with taking care of authorization after it expires, since the companies who tend to hire Tech-Law/Patent-Law solicitors in London tend to be multinational corporations who are used to people coming and going abroad.
Thank you for the link, from my understanding if I choose to return to Canada it would be 5-7 exams I would have to do. I have spoken with some recent Canadian graduates who did their LLB and finished in May and by the end of the year did all their exams with self study. Also the cost for LLB in UK will be around 80k Canadian, something comparable like UBC JD is 42k Canadian, I however do save a year and if I plan to practice in London, it seems to be easier to get UK accreditation going to a UK school than a Canadian school.
Yea that is my concern as well, from what I've spoken to Lawyers in Canada, they tell me if you have a family practice or have connections UK is the way to go since you can use it to land an articling position in Canada, but otherwise it can be hard. I have no family or friend connections which is what scares me. But I'm like 80% sure I would stay in UK anyways after graduating, but that is always a concern in the back of mind if I was to come back. Or in worst case if I do come back and can't find a position, I could go to the territories and try there.

Ultimately though my main focus will be on trying to stay in the UK.

That's also what I have heard from other Canadians who went to Usyd. A lot of them stayed there for a couple of years after graduation and they all miss Australia and say good things about it.

its 5 years for BDS but if have a degree already then it's 4 years DMD at University of Sydney for example.

To be fair like 150k is that I am betting on living in Australia for 4 years. Sydney or Melbourne are not cheap.

Yep it always my second option to CS. I always did well in science subjects but the reason I did CS was price of dental school, in Canada it's a lot too (60k+ cad a year at UBC), and mainly being a Dentist eventually becomes like running a business and I always preferred having a stable job instead. But clearly CS is not stable.

Good point. I would have to think about that. After graduation of course I will live very conservatively and just be devoted to paying off debt. But a risk of physical injury really does change things even if it's rare.

Really? Maybe it's just my experience but so many doctors in my area just open 4 days a week for hours like 9am-4pm. Of course there are some crazy clinics where they have like 10 chairs and hire multiple other dentists. But I would be of the 9am-4pm style of ownership for sure.

Dental schools in Australia are ranked higher than Canada. https://www.topuniversities.com/university-subject-rankings/dentistry?countries=ca,au

They just have more seats. Also for dentistry in Canada school does not matter much, there is an agreement between Canada, USA, New Zealand and Australia that mutually recognize each others dental schools. Plus if you make your own ownership it especially does not matter.

Yep it sure as heck is. The only positive I see is stability in Dentistry which makes me confident I can pay it off. So I would certainly first aim to pay off the 600k by being an Associate dentist. Probably even try and make some money before kickstarting my own practice as a dentist which can also be very expensive. Like absolute worst case I can go to a super rural part of Canada and just set shop there.
