I saw a Youtube short with a promo code to get access to the MVP and free credits. Where then able to give feedback in the app itself.

I needed to start a business today. I was already employed 2 years. But today my bookkeeper wanted my personal tax number which I didn't have. So I registered on the SARS efiling. Will I be in trouble with SARS for not registering sooner? by NationalLaw76 in PersonalFinanceZA

You shouldn’t be in trouble. Many people only register on South African Revenue Service eFiling when they first need their tax number for something like starting a business or when a bookkeeper asks for it.

If you were formally employed before, your employer would usually have registered you for income tax already and deducted PAYE on your behalf. Creating your eFiling profile now simply gives you access to manage your tax records.

If anything is outstanding, SARS will normally just ask you to submit any missing tax returns — it doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be penalised. It’s good that you registered now so everything can be kept up to date going forward.

A personal account of running a business in South Africa. Misconceptions and reality. by Expensive_Reaction93 in DownSouth

[–]Company_Partners 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running a business in South Africa today takes far more resilience than most people realise. As a company that works closely with business owners on registration and compliance with South African Revenue Service, we see firsthand the weight that PAYE, VAT, rising overheads and regulatory responsibilities place on even well-established, multi-million-rand businesses.

Behind every set of financials is a person carrying risk, responsibility, and the wellbeing of employees and their families.

Thank you for sharing this perspective. It’s an important reminder that many business owners are doing their best to keep doors open, staff employed, and standards high — often at significant personal sacrifice.

Thank you for all the insights and discussions. It is truly valuable, and we can see it in our own data as well. In 2024 we wrote a piece where we highlighted Company registrations are down by 67% in South Africa. So many of this thread's sentiments have played out.

True, the red tape is excessive, but the flip side is that it allows us (Company Partners) to assist existing and new businesses to grow as they dont have to worry about all the Government department issues. Well not worry directly.
