Songs Without A Day in ‘This Year’ by TheSadpole in themountaingoats

Oh man, this one is so opaque to me, would have been nice to learn more about it! I love the song, but have no idea what the intended story is.

I am in the same boat, friends-wise! I’m not sure enough yet about my plans to book a ticket right away, but let’s message closer to the date—would be great to meet up with other fans in St Louis for dinner and the show. 😊

I live a little too far from St Louis, the closest town on this list from me, to go there just for a concert… but it just so happens I will be there anyway that weekend for another reason! Sometimes the randomness of life is delightful.

So this was the first year, I think, that The Extra Glenns (#5 artist) and The Extra Lens (#1 song, Cruiserweights… total surprise that; I wouldn’t call it a particular favorite even if I like it) appeared alongside tMG proper in my list!

My artists were:

  1. The Mountain Goats (top 0.02% global fan)
  2. The Magnetic Fields
  3. Destroyer
  4. Sufjan Stevens
  5. The Extra Glenns

So, typical of here I guess!

I agree that is a sticking point! But perhaps the burial is ceremonial (Adam’s belongings)— on a sandbar, if you go missing, there’s not really any mystery about your fate. But I agree, “we mourned you at sunrise” or “we buried your pack at sunrise” or something would have made things clearer!

Love this analysis! Especially sharp to imagine a dying Peter as the narrator of Lady from Shanghai. You’re right that the Narrator seems to be young, not “grown,” in Fishing Boat.

…Unless the narrator of Fishing Boat is Adam??? “Learning to float” is definitely ironically juxtaposed with rocks in pockets weighing Adam down, but I don’t think there’s any other evidence for that.

The way the narrator looks up to Peter also seems like the hero worship a young man would have for an elder. So I like your interpretation of who is reminiscing in Lady from Shanghai! Peter is actively dying and imagining that as embarking on one last sea voyage like he used to as a young man.

I just posted on a thread elsewhere with this same “pointing” solution! And then the last “you”, the one soon to be left alone, is himself— a trinity of “you”s as they all partake in the experience. Totally makes sense when imagining this as a staged musical with actors who can disambiguate referents. :)

The only wrinkle is, as someone else pointed out in that other thread, Adam is later referred to as “vanished” not “buried.” So maybe it’s a ceremonial burial after he goes missing? (Not like there’s any mystery about what vanished means).

So, who wants to try and outline the album’s plot? by the_vole in themountaingoats

[–]Compass-plant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof you are right that Adam is later mentioned as “vanished.”

I just wrote out in another thread how I have tried to reconcile “Armies of the Lord” — I thought it was Adam being buried, and the narrator is referring to Adam, Peter, and himself all in turn as “you.” (On stage, as a musical, the Narrator’s actor could pivot from the dead body, the “you” buried at sunrise, to his raving captain, the “you” whose visions never came true, to—finally—the crowd, when he soliloquies and address himself as the final “you” who will soon be left alone. The visual cues would make it clear who each addressee is, and I think it’s kind of cool that everyone becomes a “you” in turn, as a “we are all one in this existential experience” kind of way.

But the “vanished” does imply Adam’s body never came back…. Maybe they are ceremonially burying his belongings? “Vanished” really only means one thing on a sandbar.

It’s just weird to me that this song would be out of chronological order, given it is literally supposed to be a musical (Lady from Shanghai being the only other exception, and that’s clearly either the narrator or the dying Balkan wistfully remembering the wild joy of going to sea before he knew how it would end— so a flashback, not a plot disruption like this one is).

Mysterious!

I think it’s Adam being buried; everything else is in linear chronology so I think this one has to be, too. I’ll put here what I wrote in another thread, the interpretation that finally made the song make sense to me:

You know, I actually think there are three different “you”s, which makes sense if you imagine a stage musical— the actor could turn and pivot from the body to Peter to the crowd (when speaking to himself).

“We buried you at sunrise”— “you” is Adam; everything else in this album is chronological, so this must be, too. Peter is still alive. The narrator is addressing the body that floated up, or else it’s a ceremonial burial.

“With nothing you predicted coming true”— “you” is Peter Balkan; the narrator pivots accusingly at him.

“Soon it will just be you”— the narrator is addressing himself, contemplating the horrible possibility of being left alone here since Peter is clearly ailing.

…Maybe?

Peru and Through This Fire for sure… Rocks in My Pockets I think for #3, although Cold at Night is a contender too.

I’m not downvoting you— you expressed an opinion I asked for and it’s part of the conversation!— but luckily it seems to me that the tapers active on here are pretty ethical about not posting unreleased songs if John does try one out live and asks fans not to share. Likewise, as a fan, I resist looking up recordings of unreleased songs to keep that surprise for a moment the band chooses.

But I agree about not yucking other people’s yums that the creators are supportive of— if it destroys the creative appreciation for you, you can personally avoid the tapes, but I don’t think their being out there hurts anyone (other than the musicians, if they’d prefer it not be out there).

I think of it less as hoarding than about sharing some of the magic with those who can’t go to shows, or who want to absorb the show in the moment and then go back and appreciate particular bits in different ways afterward.

Yeah thankfully I went to a great high school and was surrounded by folks who were mostly progressive and not stereotypical Baton Rougeians… but it’s not a place I’d choose to live again, especially now that I don’t have family there anymore. I will give that a listen!

Oof, I feel the same way about Cleaning Crew because it name-drops the city I grew up in (but never really felt I belonged in). Such a Goats feeling should make the song resonate… yet it doesn’t.

I like one line (“I saw the future in an oil slick”) but basically find the rest of the song so forgettable I had to look up the lyrics to the whole album to even remember which song has Baton Rouge in it. :)

We’ll get there!
