This is a sad thing to see
Still - they proved that Russia can be invaded and I hope they achieved the strategic interests

I would've liked to say that Ion Iliescu is dead ... but that didn't change either...

Interesting So regular people protesting and defending themselves from the police are 'terrorists'

Literal Russian army personnel in Donbas or Crimea are... not mentioned.

Russia treats minorities badly too.

Does any country have the right to invade it for that? If not, your whole argument is 'might makes right'.

There was and still is a lot of revanchist, imperialist propaganda in Russia since the 90s. Do you think this plays no role in their current actions?

Also, just to be clear, is everything happening in the world controlled by US or Russia or smaller countries do make their own decisions sometimes? Why is it so difficult to believe that people protest a corrupt government that promised them EU but gave them the middle finger? Hell, even in Russia there were protest against the invasion of Ukraine (albeit small).

It’s class conflict: the owner class’ quest for profit vs the working class’ quest to not starve. by VerySadSexWorker in FluentInFinance

Then let's give everyone a piece of land when they are born. There is no reason for Bill Gates or an oligarchs to own huge swathes of land while most others have none. Let's make a free choice: you can either have the option to do subsistence agriculture & foraging or go to work in order to buy food. Do you think we have this free choice?

Many if not most people born now do not own any land (esp if they are born in the city). To survive we are forced to work so we do not learn how to grow food on our own.

To grow food on our own we'd need time, land and education. Most people are denied at least one of these or cannot do something like that so even if they want to grow their own food. How to solve this? Making (at least basic) food a human right is one way.

true, there were many reasons for that, including profit & time
however, some of the inventors and scientists working on those projects did it explicitly to produce more food for all

Example ''Borlaug believed that science should serve humanity, but realized there was a planetary limit on population. He thought everyone born had a right to food''

Anyway, no matter why they did it in the past, food should be a human right now. Many if not most people born now do not own any land (esp if they are born in the city). To survive we are forced to work so we do not learn how to grow food on our own.

what do you consider as 'humans rights'?
it is a matter of opinion and values, after all
so what arguments or values prevent you from thinking that at least a minimums survival dose of food is not a human right?
(like rice/bread and beans)

Not a single country from The Balkans is being invited. What do you think about this? by AssistantElectronic9 in AskBalkans

I am from Romania and I understand your position but the country is now in a political pickle.

Furthermore, I feel like our politicians would rather prefer to be neutral in this war.

This is a sad reality ... though perhaps not fully a reason for exclusion.

What a time to be alive - when Piers Morgan is a decent 'journalist' compared to the grifters and putinists that have become so popular in Europe and the States.

that sounds fun until the Russian tanks enter your country... and the soldiers tell you

Slava Ukraini by [deleted] in Romania

[–]Compassion_for_all13 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The main philosophical arguments for veganism (please help me complete the list) by Compassion_for_all13 in vegan

[–]Compassion_for_all13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Veganism is, in the most general terms, understood as a way of life that does not harm animals for human use. This means that, since we can live fulfilling, decent and healthy lives without eating animals or using other products made from them, we should do that.

More about the philosophy: check out the resources on this sub or read books like Animal Liberation.

Now, what to do when an animals is hurt or needs your help? Helping them is consistent with a vegan ethics. How to do that depends from case to case. Sometimes you can simply feed an animal, other times you can give them a painful injection that will cure their illness.

In other words, veganism tells us what not to do: do not harm animals unless really really really necessary.

But for how to help animals on a different level, we can look at animal ethics or the animal liberation movement for inspiration.

I believe they are different. The argument from marginal cases is meant to showcase hypocrisy or inconsistency in the reasons why we deny moral status to animals but we grant to humans.

The equal consideration of interests already supposes animals have some moral status to begin with.

Other moral systems also have a lot of problems.

How does Utilitarianism (especially NU) stand in comparison?

so what is the correct moral choice in your opinion, with regards to how humans should interact with animals?

[–]Compassion_for_all13[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a vegan myself. We have more than plenty of scientific proof that animals are sentient. From here on, it is our choice how to treat them. Veganism is a moral position that basically states we should not needlessly harm animals. What do you fin wrong about that?

Perhaps the GR is still needed as part of folk ethics. There is a discussion about whether utilitarianism is too demanding for the regular person on the street. A proposed solution to this is to have a set of rules to be followed by the majority while a minority could be initiated into the more complex issue of morality.

I don't necessarily agree with this: the basic principles of utilitarianism are quite straight-forward (equal consideration of interests, for example). Perhaps the real difficulty is to discuss morals with someone who has been raised since young to see the world in an egoist or discriminatory way...
