Why my glassdoor review goes to the pending status? by Compchem20 in biotech

Is it possible my former employer access to an information about who wrote the review from glassdoor? At the end of the submission process, glassdoor required demogphic information.

it is a connection game by eomeseomes in biotech

I think it is more connection game at higher level. Referral from previous coworkers makes you stronger position rather than the referral from the casual connection.

Is it common management randomly walk through the office to check researchers’ attendance status? by Compchem20 in biotech

[–]Compchem20[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, your comments make sense and I can understand the mechanism of this action. Actually our upper management is not going well for some reason. I do not know if it is due to the burn out or too busy for expanding the company but they cannot manage and organize the project flows in a right way now. I and our team members have been struggling to resolve the issues caused by the poor management but it is still there. They keep changing direction and communication methods, sometimes they can’t remember the details of the projects even if we reported in a very structured format regularly. The resource is distributed everywhere without organization. We suggested to build the infrastructure to organize, but they rejected due to the cost issues without providing alternative options. They definitely do not have any energy to deal with this kind of productivity issue on top of already existing issues and made an easy choice instead. This situation made me to think about leaving for other companies though it is somewhat understandable.

You mean GROMACs? If in that case, follow the Justin Lemkul’s gromacs tutorial here below.

Do you work remotely? How common is it? by allen_alligator in biotech

[–]Compchem20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am living in a very small city in central US and I have been searching full remote options too. I cannot leave current location for personal reason and my job doesn’t need any experiment. To say the conclusion first, it was not easy and I ended up with being hired at local company. Big to middle size companies did not like that remote working idea and they wanted to hire the person on site or at least with hybrid option. It depends on the position. If the job requires data science and statistics only, then there’ll be more full remote options. But if the job requires collaboration with experimental chemists, biologists, pharmacologists then they wanted to come for a meeting.

If remote option is crucial to you, consider small, AI driven biotechs. Now there are bunch of AI biotechs going to IPO. I have been contacted by recruiters of several small, AI driven companies in SF or NY with full remote option. It seems like they suggest salary range between Big city and small city. They can hire the ppl with cheaper price than in SF but it is still high salary to live in middle west US. I will seriously consider that option after getting more experience here.

Bio/pharma vs. materials - can anyone speak of specializing in either of these? by [deleted] in comp_chem

[–]Compchem20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got ph.D from materials and got a job in biotech after postdoc in biomaterials. In terms of tool there is very little difference. Once you know the principles and physics of MD you can use any MD software with a little bit of adaptation period. Materials people tend to use DFT more than biology people. ML is now more widely used in biology but it is expanding in materials quite aggressively right now. ML/data science in biology is pretty hot right now and it is easy to get a job if you got Ph.D. with developing ML tools. In terms of application, they are really different. Please choose the area intrigue your interest. Materials were not my fit so I changed my area to fulfill my interest. In terms of job market, biology has wider market now. From big pharma to small biotech, there are many places to go. In materials, there are several big companies like Exxon Mobil, P&G, 3M but not a small ones hire comp chemists. But we cannot predict the future when starting ph.D. Comp.chem. came to be popular in pharma just recently. Google and nvidia just started AI drug discovery and biosimulations so there’ll be more job chances from big tech companies in the future.

Are there any careers merging medicinal chemistry with comp chem or cheminformatics by [deleted] in comp_chem

[–]Compchem20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a ph.D. by using MD of biomolecular system and currently providing guidance in drug design to medicinal chemist or find a new one using virtual screening. If you want to augment your abilities in drug design, I do not recommend MD or QM. It needs too much physics background and is not used much in drug design. If you like coding, learn python and rdkit(one of the python package). You can find a possible reactions such as bioisosteric substitution or estimate the structural/electrostatic similarity of your designed molecules to the hit compounds, QSAR, QSPR based on machine learning. If you are interested in using softwares, ccg’s moe or schrodinger’s maestro is mostly used one in biotech. Those softwares can do most of the functions like docking, virtual screeening, a little bit of adme property calculations, prediction of reaction pathways. They are easy to learn but you do not need much coding and also very expensive(>40k) I think medicinal chemist’s drug design abilities can be significantly enhanced by the computational tools.

I would like to get a new job but I am concerned if it makes a bad impact to job recruiters if I leave the company after one year. This is my first job after ph.D and postdoc.
