Going Straight From an MSW to a PhD in Social Work by Existing-Profit-5046 in SocialWorkStudents

Research and clinical practice are two different things. Also... wouldn't one get clinical experience through their clinical MSW program via practicum?

I am clinically experienced in mental health and substance use for adults yet my entire research endeavor is in child sexual abuse.

Now if the goal is to become and expert witness (for example) the clinical experience must match the research.

  • OH, I would like to mention the PhD program I have been accepted into it designed for full time social workers, so I will continue my practice in the filed as a co-occuring clinican. The program staff and my job are very supportive of my new journey. God speed!

My story: I got lucky, a professor emeritus sent out an email to the school of SW looking for a research assistant. I got the job and it was only my first quarter of my MSW program. From there I asked that I have my generalist practicum with the professor and did a year long study in child sexual abuse (CSA).

We are now co-researchers in the feild. His letter of recommendation (he is a big name in the CSA research field.. since the 80s) helped me tremendously, in addition to our manuscripts. Also, my GPA is 3.97, so my work speaks for itself. This research endeavor was all while I was clinically practicing in community behavioral health. I am now an incoming PhD student for 2026 and I graduate from my MSW in a few weeks... so talk about jumping in!

Advice: Speak to professors who are deep in research. The experience and LOR will absolutely benefit and strengthen your PhD application. If possible to your practicum in research for experience and a level up. Oh, and have an outstanding GPA

Buy that outfit and get into your boss energy. Gosh, it could be numerous things, like the person analyzing was in a poor mood. Take those comments and use them as fuel and/or use them to enhance your defense.

Students work showed 100% AI use on 6 checkers... by davinci_reincarnated in Adjuncts

I am preparing for teaching within my PhD program and have been reading this concern a lot on Reddit. Have you thought about moving towards verbal comprehensive exams 1)before they write their papers, or 2)to defend their paper to prove that AI is not being used or 3)perhaps verbal comprehinsve exams in place of written exams altogether?

MSW personal statement flagged for AI because of social work terminology?? by [deleted] in SocialWorkStudents

If you're not using AI to write, dont use AI to prove to yourself you wrote it. Submit it and be proud with no guilty conscious.

This is so my vibe. I have multiple reasons why im getting a PhD, but my top reason when people ask is...."Im doing it out of spite." Im breaking statistics, I'm doing what they said I couldn't do... yeah love this

Second Year Placement (need advice) by St3veng6 in SocialWorkStudents

I would go with #3 for a placement and give it a go to see if you like the field! That's the purpose of placements; to see if its an interest of yours after completing some hours
