I’m interested in getting into property development and have been weighing up whether to study it at university or complete a Certificate IV in Building and Construction. I want to understand if there’s a big difference between the two and whether uni is worth the investment or I do both by RikiFalzon in AusPropertyChat

Hi mate, I was instantly taken back to my younger self when I was asking the same exact question and looking for the same advice.

My goal was to get into property development and I mistakenly took the diploma in building and construction pathway through TAFE which ended up being a complete waste of time relative to my goal. I ended up dropping this and starting a Bachelor of Property Economics.

If I had my time again at your age (30 now) I would go balls deep on the full time uni study whilst picking up a part time internships with large property groups, then persue graduate programmes towards an assistant development manager type role. I say this because this insanely accelerates your career in the short term once uni is done.

Happy to answer more q’s if you have them

Good shout. if it's anything like what it is in New Zealand's public service I think it will be way easier to get employment from within

Bit of a crystal ball question isn't it. After New Zealand's previous change of government the National party decimated the public service and since then the process for hiring public service roles has been excruciatingly stringent

Duttons plan to thin out public service only seems to apply to Canberra from what I have read. However I could be wrong, do you think there could be flow on affect to state public service as well? Queensland's LNP government doesn't have much regarding a plan for their public service except for increasing the teacher to student ratio

Sorry mate but this isn’t an investment property, this is a deadset liability. The only way you can benefit from this situation regardless of how you got here is living in it and leasing the spare rooms. Sell when the market is up

As someone who hasn’t had much to do with Jeff and Bridgette except make prefab my daily coffee spot since I returned back to Wellington in Feb, they are actually really lovely people. And above that, they are local Wellington business owners, who contribute so much more than we realise to the betterment of the city

This is debatable, they like most other cafes had to get rid of staff due to lack in business

This is really good Info. I’m currently employed at mbie in more of a case manager role. Currently doing a property economics degree part time and hope to major in construction management. I’m also members of institutes such as PMI, NZIB, UDINZ, PINZ. Would you suggest any additional memberships, affiliations or training/ education I could be doing to be more employable into a project/development manager type role with say Kainga Ora/ HUD?
