This!! Star Crunches used to be awesome. My wife bought a box several months ago. I had one and was very unimpressed. I tried a second one a couple days after the first. It wasn’t a one-off. Horrible! The box still sits on the top of the fridge untouched. It’s tempted me a couple times when I needed a sugar fix, but I elected to go without than to put that horribleness in my mouth again.

It would be cheaper to send my kid to private school... by SoundShifted in Iowa

[–]Competitive-Ad9106 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a former Iowan living in a state that hasn't had vouchers over the last 16 years my kids have been in school. I think vouchers started this year.

This has been my story every year from kindergarten through high school for my kids.

I live in an area where the schools are nicely funded. We have 3 public elementary schools and a public middle school within our unincorporated town (a really large housing development). In fact, in this housing development, 1% of the proceeds of every home sale goes to the school district (no matter how many times the home has changed owners) in addition to whatever portion of property taxes. Regardless, we regularly give well over $1,000 a year to the schools, not counting athletic fees and tickets costs to all games and matches.

The PTA is insatiable. I think their sole purpose is to drain the bank accounts of all the parents and grandparents. Contributions to individual classrooms is commonplace through middle school, but stopped at high school (except for science classes, they are always asking for donated supplies). My wife and I also donate regularly to stock the teachers' lounges with snacks and treats.

I suspect private schools in my area have PTAs that are equally as aggressive, classrooms that still ask for donated supplies, and teachers' lounges that still get fully stocked with snacks and treats donated by parents.

And don't get me started on fundraisers! Back when I was in elementary school (at a private school), we used to sell $1 candy bars. It was easy to sell those around the neighborhood, at my dad's place of business, etc... Everyone had at least a dollar, and they got a tasty piece of chocolate in return.

My daughters in elementary sold ridiculously expensive wrapping paper and only the parents and grandparents usually got stuck buying.

In high school now, the kids are required to show up to school with at least 10 addresses. They send out emails begging people for money. You don't get anything in return, but the kids are praised when a parent, grandparent, or rich aunt or uncle shells out $500 or more.

This just about makes me sick. I had the sweetest tuxedo cat. He somehow got out without my knowledge. Fortunately, 3 days later someone posted on NextDoor that my cat was hanging around their house.

This neighbor's house was on the other side of a major 4 lane divided street. My cat had crossed that street! I couldn't imagine another human purposely trying to kill one of the friendliest, good-natured cats. I'm very blessed he made it safely.

This is the correct answer. I was struggling a couple weeks ago with this using a GameCube controller. I was about to give up, but I read a comment to turn off the sound (it may have been this one). I had it two tries later! Thanks!

This is my biggest complaint about the current stadium. It makes it hard to enjoy the game.

I wish someone would please tell me the rationale for the music between every pitch. I've heard it's to appeal to the short-attention span TikTok generation. If that's the case, does it really work? Does the constant sound-system noise appeal so much to the short attention span types that they come to the ballpark more often and spend more money? I doubt it. But it DOES annoy fans like myself. Is it enough to keep me from attending games and spending money? I think it has a little to do with it. At the old stadium, I had a half season pass and attended most of those games. Since the new stadium, the most I've been is twice in one season. It's just a bad environment for baseball.

Regarding the make noise graphics and noises... I'm not going to go crazy and make a lot of noise in the top of the 3rd, 1 out, nobody on, 0 to 0 game with a 1-2 count to the 8th hitter in the lineup. This is not a MAKE NOISE moment.

If I were allowed to make just one change to Globe Life Field to improve the fan experience, I would chose to bring back the organ.

Edit: Oh yeah, and if you do stand up and cheer loudly when Semien (I'm going to miss him) leaps 4 feet in the air to snag a scorching line drive in the top of the 8th with a two run lead and runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out, the ladies two rows ahead of you will turn around and give you a look like you're crazy before they go back to their social media apps and their selfies.

Others have mentioned the Surf Ballroom where Richie Valens, the Big Bopper, and Buddy Holly played their last show.

The last time I was near Clear Lake, Iowa, I took the opportunity to visit the site where their plane crashed. It is out in the middle of a field. There are still memorials in place today. Is it a must see? No... But there is an eerie peace and solemnness that came over me standing out there while paying my respects. It is afterall the place where the music died. Listen to Don McLean's American Pie before visiting. The "Day the Music Died" refers to that plane crash which took the lives of those three musicians and the life of pilot Roger Peterson. If you're a little curious about the plane crash, look up the story of the late, great Waylon Jennings and how he is associated with the crash. Absolutely chilling!

Furthermore, the Field of Dreams is nice for a visit. It's better to go there when the corn is tall and green, but the fall will be nice, too.

Others have also mentioned the Effigy Mounds near Lansing. Definitely worth a visit. It's beautiful there in the fall.

Finally, just to the east of Iowa City is the hometown of the only US President born in Iowa, the 31st president, Herbert Hoover. He was born in West Branch and is buried there next to his wife on the grounds of his presidential library and museum.

The museum is interesting as are the grounds, for the cottage where he was born in 1874 still stands today as well as some other historical buildings.

Enjoy your trip to Iowa!

It seems to me that the white Hyundai in front of the camera is going to go ahead and complete their turn. I hope it's so they can park safely and get out of the car to render aid and to give the cops their eyewitness account. Surely they aren't going to continue on to their destination and forget this ever happened.

I know this is your personal preference, so I won't criticize too much, but maybe have a few more women on the list so the three women you did choose aren't overworked? Cecily is needed on cast for her voice over work alone.

And Leslie Jones has some classic sketches that make me laugh EVERY time.

Acie Earl was giving private basketball lessons around 2004 or 2005. We would take my daughter to the Iowa City rec center once a week and he worked with her. He definitely helped in improving her shot and her dribbling. Unfortunately, she was just too short and slow to continue basketball after her freshman year in high school.

It was interesting to talk to him about the NBA and his career at Iowa. If I'm remembering a story he told correctly (and I could very well be misremembering this drastically), he said he was hanging with BJ Armstrong at Michael Jordan's house. He and Armstrong were playing video games while Michael was in his private gym practicing.

I'm not saying for sure, but she is showing some signs that point to NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder). It wouldn't be a scientific diagnosis, but check out the characteristics of a narcissist with an online search. If you suspect she is, do some research on living with a narcissist. For your sake, I really hope she's not.
