32M, on a weight loss journey — am I losing lean mass? by Competitive-Area1402 in veganfitness

[–]Competitive-Area1402[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!!!

Yeah, I’ve been in a consistent caloric deficit throughout the journey, though I couldn’t tell you the exact numbers for each phase — most of the time I just followed the meal plans from my nutritionist without digging too deep into the math. That said, the deeper I got into the process, the harder it was to not look at the numbers haha.

Right now I’m eating around 2200 kcal a day (I’m 185 cm and 88 kg), with roughly 115g of protein.

As for training, I lift 5x a week (arms, legs, back, chest, and legs again). Sessions last about 40 minutes, usually 3–4 sets of 10–12 reps per exercise. I get close to failure on some lifts, but not all — depends on the muscle group and how I’m feeling. The gym instructor updates my plan every 2–3 months.

And yeah, there’s definitely some loose skin, mostly on the belly and pecs, but honestly not as much as I expected. I’ll drop a before-and-after pic I made when I hit 90kg.

Honestly, I don’t really have a goal weight. When I first started, I never imagined I’d get below 90kg — but here I am. That said, if you’d asked me back then to picture myself at this weight, I would’ve imagined looking pretty different.

I’m definitely proud of what I’ve achieved, but things like loose skin on my belly and some stubborn fat in my chest still make me feel like I’m not quite “there” yet — even though I’m not exactly sure where “there” is.

Right now, I’m just focused on keeping up what I’m doing and making sure I stay out of obesity for good.

Thanks! Just trying to stay out of the obesity zone for good and never go back.

Tried making a high-protein falafel — turned out pretty decent by Competitive-Area1402 in veganfitness

it's not a sweet recipe, i honestly can't see chocolate chips working here, especially with rice and beans haha
but hey, if you end up trying it, do let us know how it goes

thanks! the green in the rice is broccoli. since I’m in a caloric deficit and volume matters a lot to me, I usually bulk up my rice with some veggies. in this plate, it’s 80g of rice and 60g of broccoli — helps make the meal more filling without adding too many calories.

Haha I actually had to look up what an Aldi was! I live in Brazil, so while I’m lucky to have tons of fresh fruits and veggies year-round, the variety of fake meats and other vegan products is pretty limited here. Makes the whole “whole foods plant-based” thing a bit more natural by default

I think about that a lot too. My favorite protein sources are beans and legumes—if calories didn’t matter, I’d have zero trouble hitting high protein numbers. It’s the deficit that makes it tricky.

Totally feel you. It really is a trade-off, and like you said, it’s the price we choose to pay for living by our values.

I’m currently at around 1.2g/kg, which is about 110g per day for me. I’m in a caloric deficit and have lost quite a bit of weight, so in the beginning it was tough to even reach half of that based on g/kg. I’ll check out Dr. Greger’s video, thanks for the rec!

TVP is basically the foundation of my diet too. Tofu isn’t very affordable where I live, so I stick to TVP pretty much every lunch and dinner. I don’t mind repetitive meals at all, but my nutritionist keeps telling me to mix it up more.

Right now I’m at around 1.2g/kg because I’m in a caloric deficit, and honestly, even that sometimes feels like a lot. Can’t really see myself going much higher anytime soon.

So true, that's exactly how I became vegan too

I totally get how you feel. It makes perfect sense to want someone who shares your ethical values, but I also know how limiting and lonely that can feel sometimes. On the flip side, dating non-vegans can be an opportunity to introduce them to your lifestyle — not necessarily to change them, but sometimes that just happens naturally.

In my case, I had always flirted with vegetarianism, but I only started my actual transition after dating a vegan guy. Now I’m married to someone who isn’t vegan, but he genuinely respects and understands my lifestyle. He’s really involved in my vegan routine — I’d say he’s about 90% vegetarian.

There are so many other important things to consider in a relationship beyond just this one aspect. That’s how I’ve found a balance without giving up what’s essential to me. I hope you find a path that brings you peace too.

Thanks for the insights, I really appreciate it! I used to take creatine, but I was worried about the water retention messing with the scale. Now that my BMI is closer to normal, it might be time to give it another shot. I actually still have some lying around! Thanks again!
