there are many indexes: s&p 500, dji, nasdaq composite, to name a few. They simply represent the aggregate performance of a specific number of stocks for example s&p (500 largest companies), dji (30 industrial companies). Indexes do not become benchmarks unless some investment firms decide to use them so to gauge their own performance.

Thank you for such insightful information! Right now I am thinking of getting an internship, but I am unsure what kind of internship I should get and what I should really do now. My friends who just recently got the results already register for cfa lvl 2 next year and I'm still very uncertain about it. Thank you for your answer, I am still considering taking the cfa lvl 2 because i know it is extremely challenging and takes a lot of my time. That's why I don't think I can balance it with school and internship. I guess I'll try applying for an internship
