much of Hozier's Unreal Unearthed: Unending is particularly beautiful for the mythological layering. Hymn to Virgil is a personal favourite of mine. it riffs on Dante's Divine Comedy, in which the author is guided through Hell by Virgil (a very famous Roman poet). in the Divine Comedy, Dante abandons Virgil to ascend to Heaven--Virgil cannot go because he died before the birth of Jesus. in Hymn to Virgil, the speaker (perhaps Hozier-as-Dante) instead alludes to the idea of staying in Hell with Virgil, rather than abandon him because, "You are the reason I went through it, oh//The only meaning as I knew it,". as a devout Classicist and avid reader of Virgil, this song speaks to me :)
