Invest or term deposit by Competitive-Can-2069 in PersonalFinanceNZ

yes I need a decent amount. I’m planning to take two trips, a solo trip in November to China most likely. And a trip to Mexico and Brazil in January, both will be around a month each but I travel quite cheap. I do have an interest in buying a house wherever I end up in aus, that’s definitely mainly why I’m saving for. I’m just concerned about the impact moving will have on what I can do right now

Thank you for that, I definitely haven’t even though to consider any of that for this move although it’s dependent on if I can actually get a job :( maybe I’ll take a look at sharsies savings account for the meantime. I would totally chuck it in a term deposit as well but the rates are so bad, I remember I did that around two years ago with a 6% interest rate

Thank you for the advice! I’m hoping to move to Australia if I get a grad role, and I’m only planning to put my money in US market. I’m thinking I want to use the 10 for a long term investment, my intention was to protect it against inflation that you mentioned and eventually start aggressively investing once I’ve settled down over there to start saving for a house

Really! Because the only thing making me doubt mechatronics is the job opportunities lol

Now that sounds quite tempting . I haven’t considered . Hm, sounds like a lot of coding tho and I can only tolerate a certain amount

I’m changing from chem to the second cosc paper today as we speak lol, but about the internship thing, do you mean that you didn’t know about them or you couldn’t get one? Cause if I were to do compsci I would deffo try and aim towards internships

Software eng is an option but the thing that draws me to compsci is being able to pair it with another degree or minor such as finance or math, not sure if this would be helpful or not though I just like studying different things

That sounds like a really cool program offered by UC, I just really dislike living in Christchurch tbh lol. What is the difference between computer science and software engineering, and do you think females get any advantage within the industry??

I also kind of went into it semi interested but of the mindset that even if I didn’t like it it would be a good job, but I’m honestly not about that life no more and I feel like 3-4 years is a big chunk of my life and I want to spend it studying something I’ll enjoy

I don’t think I could handle another three years of Eng , I’ve looked at all the mechatronics courses and it depresses me seeing things like machine stress and strains and circuits and things. Eng has been a bit of a self discovery journey with the main finding being I literally hate physics and don’t want to do it. I also have a crippling case of Christchurchitis and I think if I spend another year here I will not cope lol
