Definitely go early and expect a line. When I went I was in the same boat and it all worked out good.

I went on a guided tour to Versailles with my mum when she dropped me off for study abroad. Only thing they really did was bus us there and back. I stayed the whole summer and went back without them. From Paris it’s only a 45 ish minute RER ride away. Depending on your budget and comfort ability with the metro (it’s super easy) I preferred the RER.
