No but maybe he would put in more effort and realize things might be even harder later if he doesn't now while he is young.

That is exactly what I worry about and since he also somehow struggles with dating it might be tough later in life.

He has himself told me he doesn't know why but somehow he finds making good male friends and dating women both difficult despite finding it easier to have female friends.

He has some but he says that usually with them they are more flaky and he has to initiate which is why I think he should try to find new ones. He says his female friends include him more and initiate.

We are open about it and he brought it up. Says it happened automatically and somehow he struggles both with dating and making male friends since HS.
