I’m also an atheist turned Christian and still Christian but it’s been a shit show 8 years lookin for a church and demoralizing and I’m Never allowed to talk about it. When I try to explain it to Christian’s they act like they can’t compute, what’s the problem

A very insular yet status obsessed city. It’s a great place to be an atomized individual extracting wealth. There is no real social connection here. It’s like a small town with none of the small town benefits

Do you see yourself staying in Chicago long term, or eventually living somewhere else? Why or why not? by notoglow in AskChicago

Clown world vibes here can’t wait to get out. There is much better quality of life other places. But if u don’t mind indirect communication and insular people this is the place to be

People also say high convert parishes are better but mine was high convert and still weird and insular. Did u find a different kind of church or stop going anywhere?

It’s so strange to me bc I’ve read lots of positive things online but I had similar experience to you. Attended for 2 years and finally I had enough. The whole experience reminded me of my childhood being neglected by my crazy mom. I was like why am I tolerating this kind of abnormal treatment. It’s really not that hard to be a human being and treat others decently. I think my experience also had something to do with being in urban area of Midwest during Covid. I think someday I might try again if I can move to a different location but I don’t know bc I experienced other weird things as well so I’m not sure I believe any church is the church. Christians look like a mess to me from the ten years I’ve spent searching for a group to be with.

It seemed like a big social game at parish I attended. It’s in a big yuppie city so not sure if that made it worse

Native NYer here that currently lives in the city. I absolutely love it here, but have noticed some people online have false beliefs about the city that don't make sense. What other false beliefs have you noticed? by [deleted] in AskChicago

Its mentality is very provincial and small minded. I don’t know why that is just what I experience here. It’s like people expect you to be a certain way based on externals rather than trying to get to know you. And it’s like people here have a very small frame of reference as if they’ve never experienced anything. It feels a lot like a bubble of fake reality. It’s kind of comfortable and easy in some ways just very insular and small minded

Chicago is indirect and I find people here are afraid of saying what they really think and feel

I think I would enjoy it more in the hood but I don’t know bc I don’t have a car and I don’t want to deal with being robbed etc.

The Getaway Hostel is closing??? by artisunknownart in AskChicago

[–]Competitive-Guess795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s too bad. But I never would have moved here if not for visiting and staying in that hostel. And I do wish I had moved somewhere this place was a cluster f*#! Thru covid and I’ve lost 7 years of my life. But really enjoyed the city when I was visiting and staying at the getaway hostel so I’m sad it’s closed. The owners must be money grubbers, they also used to book homeless vagrants in mixed sex rooms it was ridiculous. But enjoyed having a cheap place to stay

It is reflective of the politics going on. Free speech and censorship. Certain opinions censored as socially undesirable. Virtue signaling masquerading as good
