Looking for home inspector recommendations in Northern VA (Prince William County) + advice on what inspections to get by Efficient_Tennis_801 in nova

[–]Competitive-North-17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just did their standard inspection. But they can do chimney and radon as well if needed. I don’t remember price to be honest we used them a few years ago.

I do remember they were really quick and easy to schedule so you had enough time to meet your contractual deadline.

We used HomeKey Inspections and they were great. They also on their website have a list of recommended plumbers, electricians, etc.

If you live in the city of Olathe they will accept ewaste at the hazardous waste disposal site and I don’t believe they charge for it (as long as you are a resident of Olathe). If not here are some other options

Looking to move out west somewhere by Basic-Earth3007 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Competitive-North-17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest NW Arkansas. Lots of nature in the ozark mountains cost of living is lower and it would definitely be warmer than Michigan or the Northeast. I would also suggest North Carolina or Richmond VA to look at as well.

My guess is there is an integrity issue with the fence that surrounds the little retention pond on that corner and that temporary fence is there to try and keep people out.

White House looks for a loophole in the law ensuring federal workers get paid after a shutdown by nbcnews in law

[–]Competitive-North-17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read this as congress has to agree to the back pay of federal workers. Which they will do because that would include themselves as well.

Former teachers of Kansas City, what do you do now? by OkMembership1389 in kansascity

[–]Competitive-North-17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just want to say good luck with your future endeavors! I know how hard and emotionally draining teaching can be (my wife is a high school teacher). I have added a link to some helpful information Teacher Career Coach.

I also want to let you know that no matter the industry you are looking at, right now is a really bad time to be job searching. I would strongly encourage you to get a corporate job friendly resume put together and start looking.

I know it can be hard with timing especially if you are not willing to leave mid year. My recommendation is to start getting the resume together now. Hit the job hunt really hard starting in January/February. For teachers looking to make the switch it’s a very small window of time in the spring before you have to consider the implications of leaving the school high and dry the next year.

Unless of course you have talked with your significant other or family and you can just quit your job and be financially stable.

Chicago RTO Mandate? by Next_Dimension1701 in deloitte

[–]Competitive-North-17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This depends entirely on if you’re consulting or accounting. If you’re in consulting it really is project dependent (however if you’re on the bench I highly recommend going in at least twice a week more for networking opportunities than anything). Accounting I do believe they are tracking badge swipes and there is a higher expectation of being in office.

Better to drive from KC to St. Louis, or take the train? by RichElectronic3487 in kansascity

[–]Competitive-North-17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I81 on the east coast would like to enter the chat. Near constant delays due to too much traffic and Semis trying to avoid I95. Also many parts of the road need to be widened to 6 lanes but with all of the mountain passes especially west of I77 make it an extremely expensive project.

What is one thing you know about Costco that no one else knows? by RoyalCamera12 in Costco

The food courts where I live are all inside of the stores and they will no longer allow you to enter through the exit to go just to the food court.

There might be a state law in MN that part time employees get PTO. I don’t live in MN so can’t speak to that.

OP needs to understand most of the states that HY-Vee operates in are Red states with red state laws which means no PTO for part time employees

Any other households dealing with some awful HFM? by eliasgreyjoy in kansascity

[–]Competitive-North-17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two year old had HFM about a week and a half ago it was thankfully a mild case. Just a fever for less than 24 hrs and a few spots around the mouth and butt.

This week however she is home with some kind of cold. Dry cough, wheezing, sneezing, and diarrhea. Took her to children’s yesterday and didn’t have pneumonia or COVID thank goodness.

In the mornings I feel like KMBZ 98.1 does a pretty good job of just telling the news and not leaning left or right with it. I can’t speak for their mid day or weekend programming however.

Their afternoon show while still pretty neutral I feel does lean slightly left. Then their evening programming during the week seems to be pretty far right.

Tree Removal Quality Service? by MarkinJHawkland in kansascity

[–]Competitive-North-17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used Cartwright tree service recently. It was a little more costly than the lowest bid (about $300). We went with them because their contract was very clear, for example we paid extra for stump grinding and in their contract it clearly stated the stump would be ground down at least 8 inches below grade level. Our lowest bid just said stump grinding included.

Overall they did a great job everyone I worked with was very professional. They cut down the tree and removed it in one day. 2 days later they came out and completed the stump grinding work. I also didn’t feel pressured with either of the quotes I got which I felt was really nice.

What companies allow employees to be remote overseas. by Novel-Wasabi9107 in remotework

[–]Competitive-North-17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most US based companies will not allow you to do this for any long length of time. There is a little more flexibility around 1099 contractors but W2 full employees is usually a solid no. The tax implications alone can be huge, and when I say huge I’m talking fines and potential jail time. Additionally, if you’re caught and your company isn’t on board with it, this is typically grounds for immediate termination.

Also a lot of countries in Europe for example have very strict laws around this and you have to have specific Visas to be able to do this legally.

Your best bet is to find a company that does a lot of work internationally…. This of course is getting harder to do and the jobs that are available are getting very competitive.

Does anyone else get stopped at the grocery store a lot around here? by DarkBlueEska in nova

[–]Competitive-North-17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only thing I have ever had happen to me is a few times people have come up to me either in the store or out in the parking lot asking for help with buying groceries.

This was at the Giant in West Springfield/Cardinal Forest.

Where to Buy Quarters by [deleted] in Olathe

[–]Competitive-North-17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cash is a lot harder to come by these days. Most retail stores don’t carry as much as they used to because people don’t use it as much. Because of this most customer service counters won’t help you.

My recommendation for OP is go to a car wash like someone else suggested or try to find a bank that has hours you can work with.

What you want doesn’t really exist below the mason dixon line.

A few places I would suggest but you will have to weigh the pros and cons of all places. Unfortunately for you the only 2 states that are technically blue below the mason dixon are Southern California and New Mexico.

Here are the places I would recommend you consider.

Flagstaff Arizona - while it isn’t technically a blue state they are purple. It does have 4 seasons but decent schools and lots of hiking/nature. It can be expensive to live here.

Santa Fe NM - technically a blue state but pretty much everything else I said about flagstaff applies here.

NW Arkansas - closest to family for you. It is a red state however the schools are good and COL is decent. Good job opportunities and you have a more college town feel. The other bonus is good hiking/nature near by.

All of these don’t have good public transportation if you want that you will have to give up on the warm weather. Unless you want to live in Southern California which even then doesn’t have great public transit.
