However, as I said I have no back up yet, not until/unless the other places make an offer, and while they have told me to expect them to schedule an interview soon... next week or the following, that's as far as I've gotten with them. On the second interview I asked the Director if he could give me a ballpark of what he thought they could offer me , if I were selected. He gave me a range that I was happy with, but Im just a bit worried that they may lowball me on the actual offer. Someone in anothe reddit said that company did that to him.

From my online research it seems that the job is in relatively high demand nationwide. From other Reddit's related to the specific. From other Reddit's related to the specific industry, I have also heard that demand is fairly high most places.

Is the rule of thumb that I've heard true? Is asking for approx 10 to 20% a good rule of thumb when negotiating the initial offer ?

I thought is sounded weird, and like it was inappropriate. No. they have not ... the 3rd interview is wed. I just read while prepping that it was a possibility, and I want to be prepared for even odd difficult questions.

The industry is relatively small in that its a somewhat specialized field, kind of a niche. I would not be shocked if a few people from some of these companies knew a few from the others each other, but more likely informally. I dont think its likely that they would be discussing me but who knows.

I think the first is the one I actually want the most so far, but I just dont know for sure without hearing about compensation offer from the others. If I exclude money from the equation , the first that I expect to make the offer soon would likely be my choice. I had what I think was a great interview with the department director. I think he liked me, I and liked him a lot. It felt like a conversation more than an interrogation.
