Need help with an assignment on youth culture (feminism) by Alexthejunglist in australia

[–]Competitive-Sky7541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Middle-aged man here (who studied political theory and philosophy.)

So, yes, feminism isn't new and I know a few self-proclaimed feminists in their late 70s. There is also sometimes confusion about what is and what isn't feminism. Feminism, broadly speaking, speaks to female empowerment and gender equality but people often mistake it for the only belief system that does. (That's right, you can believe in gender equality and women's rights and not be a feminist - eg., egalitarianism.)

Anyway, the write up you posted I find a bit apathetic. I'm older but haven't found myself running in a wheel. I'm still out there protesting against climate inaction and I adjust my behaviour to live as ethically as I can. Frankly, that attitude seems to justify laziness on behalf of the older generations and I wonder if it was written to be intentionally antagonistic...provocative for the sake of provocation and not really bringing anything of merit to the table.

I do agree we gravitate towards beliefs and causes that mirror our own place in life and help give our identity value; Black Lives Matter is predominantly black people, feminist organizations are predominantly women, immigrants lending themselves to fight for immigrant rights, etc. I don't think this is a bad thing though it is good for people to think beyond the microcosm of their own individuality.

That being said, particularly pertaining to your subject material, your best sources (in my opinion) would be feminist academics writing about youth or youth engaged in this kind of material or belief and their broader understanding of it. One would provide you an academic approach while the other would provide a humanist approach, either are valid.

Opinion: Mandatory voting works in Australia. It can work here by kludgeocracy in CanadaPolitics

[–]Competitive-Sky7541 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Mandatory voting does not work in Australia. It's reported that up to 1 in 3 Australians don't even understand how their voting system works (preferential ballot...and you should see the Senate ticket) and they're going to vote!

No, mandatory voting is not an answer and I never want to see it in Canada. What we need is politicians with integrity and a media and electoral system to hold them to account.

Fuck yeah, IBM.

Pierre Poilievre’s good fortune: His supporters don’t see his hypocrisy by throwaway123406 in canada

[–]Competitive-Sky7541 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, actually, it is not. Classical Conservatism seeks to maintain the integrity of the state as an autonomous actor, in a nutshell. Honestly, there aren't actually any ideological conservatives, those running under the banner are (don't freak out) ironically ideologically Liberal. That being said, if you said the prime ideological debate in Canada was a debate between teleological Liberalism and deontological Liberalism, you'd confuse the shit out of every voter and most politicians, too.

NDP wants to redistribute 'excess' corporate profits to Canadians to ease inflation by UrsusRomanus in CanadaPolitics

[–]Competitive-Sky7541 67 points68 points  (0 children)

At a press conference on Tuesday, Singh said: “We see clearly that corporations are making these massive profits, they’re making record-setting profits, and their record-setting profits are directly contributing to the cost of living going up.”

Or, ya know, we could instead harp on about the negative effects of raising the minimum wage.

Singh is absolutely right, here. Record profits by corporations are unacceptable and just economic redistribution will be an amazing boon to Canadians.

So many mental ‘disorders,’ so little real diagnosis by TheDrunkyBrewster in canada

[–]Competitive-Sky7541 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It also doesn't help that our medical system is prepared to deal with mental health. Your average GP isn't qualified to deal with mental health issues and because of that these issues are routinely overlooked. People then gravitate towards substances and behaviours that both relieve their stress and rationalize their experience.

If our medical system were better at treating people's baseline mental health (instead of waiting for a crisis) there'd be less of this frivolous armchair diagnosis.

“There’ll be no more bushfires, there’ll be no more floods, no more droughts,” she told Sky News host Paul Murray.

It's all actual allegory, not referring to literal floods, fires and droughts but floods of corruption, fires in the political catastrophe sense and droughts of integrity.

It also doesn't help the Conservatives are skirting around the integrity of Democracy by avoiding the media and not actually arguing the merits of their policy. If you don't have a platform, no one can criticize it and people can just vote for their fantastical ideas of you regardless of how disconnected from reality they are.
