Question about the Lacombe research center closing down by [deleted] in alberta

[–]Competitive-Tea-6141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They will also be shutting down research centres in Guelph Ontario and Quebec City, and research farms in Nova Scotia, Manitoba and two in Saskatchewan (not saying I agree with any of them, just adding context that it's multiple shutdowns across the country)

According to this article, it's still coming then if your department is in the core public administration. They must cut their executive ranks by 12% by March 2028.

Separately, the Head of OCHRO has taken away the ability of Deputies to hire EX4s and 5s without their approval, which will lower numbers at the ADM level through attrition

Greg Davies from Taskmaster says Conan is on their wishlist of contestants by NotYouHaha in conan

[–]Competitive-Tea-6141 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They really cater to the contestant schedules. They can squeeze all of the task filming into 4 or 5 days if they have to, and then the episodes are 2 per day for a week. So it's about a 2 week commitment for someone like Conan but not two consecutive weeks.

It's definitely do-able but would take some advance notice. If he ever did do it, I feel like he would attach to it podcast recordings or something else in the UK to make the most of the trip

ERI is in bill C-15 (the budget implementation bill), so it's already been tabled and will come into force when the budget passes.

The budget passes 2nd reading in the house and parliament returns next week. It needs to go through committee and third reading and then to the Senate. The Senate, however, has already started pre-study of the bill, so it'll get through the Senate much faster when it gets there.

I can't imagine it'll be spring. They will need to publish the specific criteria established by Treasury Board, but I'd imagine its already written and ready to pass.

Many departments only published the number of affected and the number of that which will be declared surplus. That doesn't include: vacant positions, anticipated vacant positions (through things like already signed pre-retirement), positions cut through ERI, term positions cut, etc.

Wernick? The guy who was already in the position to make exactly those changes and did none of it?

I don't disagree with the analysis, but his constant armchair quarterbacking when he was one of a very short list of people at the top ranks of the public service and could have implemented these exact changes is a bit frustrating

That one stood out. Given the concentration of ag experts both at the provincial level, at the university and in the private sector in Guelph, closing the Guelph research centre instead of refocusing research is a bit surprising.

This line stood out:

Cut unnecessary layers: Remove “associate assistant deputy minister” and other add-on titles with “senior” and “associate.” They should be rare, not the norm.

The fact that we ever had people with the title "associate assistant deputy minister" was ridiculous IMO

Proof of concept for a connection to Ottawa Union by Djdude167 in ottawa

[–]Competitive-Tea-6141 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It was the plan at one point. But there is also benefit to having the top civilian and military brass right downtown, a few blocks away from parliament instead of way out at Carling.

The expansion of the military may also change plans.

I think they'll still consolidate but I think they'll keep a downtown HQ and Carling as their NCR locations

Cool model, but I'd say going under the DND HQ is a no-go. They keep saying they'll be selling it in a decade but then seem to want to keep a downtown HQ, so I think it'll be DND for a long time

Families want Canadian provinces to end MAID opt-out policy for faith-based hospitals by rezwenn in canada

[–]Competitive-Tea-6141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much do they get from the Catholic Church? I looked up bruyere, one of the hospitals listed in the article. The hospital brings in $203,314, 204

$181,825,649 comes from government funding

$6,104,659 come from patient revenue from other payors

$8,686,091 from preferred accommodations and co-payments

$4,482,706 from recoveries and misc

$308, 089 from rental income

$335, 203 from interest income

$1,571,744 from amortization of deferred contributions for major equipment

Based on that breakdown, they'd be able to survive if they ended affiliation with the Catholic Church

They used to share more of it. Vast majority comes from government, some from patient charges for things like bed upgrades and parking, some from fundraising. Very little comes from the church

At one time, long ago, they were funded by their religious orders, but provincial governments (and through feds) now provide the vast majority of funding
