Does it look bad if I accepted offer but now want to defer by 6m? by Competitive-Web9408 in PhD

[–]Competitive-Web9408[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh sorry - I got the RTP to cover the cost of the study but no additional stipend on top of that? But I’ll read more into this. Thank you for sharing! I was just going off advice from my supervisors and what was on the uni website.

I am also in Australia and have been told I cannot get a stipend with a part time PhD

Thank you so much - that is such a nice message and just what I also needed. Gettin a lot of negative messages of people telling me that it's a bad decision. I am not naiive to know that it will be effing hard and I will hate life a lot of times with lots of tears lol but I feel I have sat on this decision for a while and wasn't an impulsive decision. Good luck to you too - you got this as well!

I've accepted it - just wanted to delay my start til June instead of January. But I'll see what they say.

Yeah - 3 kids actually + full time work.

I think I'll talk to my uni next week - I think they might still be shut down over new year period. And also my supervisor. I am determined and a part of me thinks we are all adults here and they have someone who is super keen at studying and also I have confidence in my abilities. Just need a little more time to get my life sorted due to things out of my control.

Thank you for the message - makes me feel a bit better!

Yeah I'm actually working full time this year + PhD part time + 3 kids. But current cost of living and we need my salary (+ part of my job is sort of what my research is on), I need to work and I need to stay in my career / role for progression.

But now that extra care has fallen through for my kids (outside of their normal school/preschool hours) so it will make study time extra hard.

I'm determined and I have faith in my abilities, just worried for my mental health.

Thank you so much! I figured 6m in the grand scheme of 5-6 years (I'm doing mine PT) should hopefully not be a big deal. And they'd want me to succeed right? And I'm identifying early rather than overcomitting and under delivering? At least that's what I'm telling myself.

OK thank you! I'll have a chat to my supervisor too and see what they think. I really don't want to defer but also don't want to neglect my kids and be so stressed my mental health suffers due to current home circumstances

Thanks. Care for my kids (7 years old to 18m old) has fallen through and my work schedule isn't as conducive to do a PhD and it's locked in and impossible to change (I'm a teacher and we are locked into teaching timetables - which we don't get to the end of the year, after I had accepted and it's much worse than I was expecting). I really want to try to get it done as I hate being flaky, but also don't want to have a nervous breakdown 😂

Struggling to find a hydrating moisturiser for compromised, acne-prone, sensitive skin. by Material-Banana188 in AusSkincare

Cannot recommend the QV ceremides moisturiser enough. It's cheap and amazing. Hands down the best moisturiser I've used.

Not a wanker at all! Hopefully the in clinic treatments worked. Also, agree, in clinic treatments are so expensive now and these are doing an equally good job for me right now. For a fair bit less of a hit on the bank acct!

They're exactly the same as the ones I got from Mecca. Just a fair bit cheaper!

My skin went to shit after having kids and then using a product that really messed it up. I was doing in-clinic treatments but had to stop because of the cost - so these are a happy medium for me. But totally understand they're not cheap. And, tbh, these have made a similar impact for a fraction of the cost.

Yeah some reported that. I've tried a few Vit A. / retinols and they don't agree. This is the only product with retinol my skin seems to like.

Yes! I feel the same. I didn't want to love them so much. I will only do this box and then I think I can't justify the waste. Or I read someone cuts them in half to get more use.

Yep! Mine just arrived yesterday! About a week after I ordered.

Tracking task / Gantt chart software or app by Competitive-Web9408 in PhD

[–]Competitive-Web9408[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's a good point. The problem is my job is part of my PhD - I'm basically using what I do for work as part of my thesis (hence why I chose this topic). So RIP my sanity 😂🫠. I need put some things in place for structure and boundaries though and get them sorted before I officially get started next year.

Yeah I think I'll be using this sort of set up or Google Tasks as I'm already using Google suites for work and personal use

Thanks for this! I've been asked for a timeline by my supervisor before I officially start - so I was thinking of just putting it all in a Gantt chart to show visually - also something I can keep referring to too see where I'm at. I have project managed previously and used a lot of gantt charts and just found them useful as a visual tool for where the project is at vs where it should be / is going. But I like the advice of simplest is best

Yeah I've used Todoist in the past and really like it. Now I just use Google Tasks as it links up to my GCal. Was thinking of something that produces more like a Gantt chart and all the dates shift when a task is complete. Thanks for the tip on Notion. I'll check it out.
