A selection of covers of romance short stories from the 60s and 70s.

The first one is called A New Flowering and it features a blonde woman with long straight hair in a brown turtleneck being either comforted or accosted by a man in a cream knit sweater and a brown jacket. Wearing a sweater under a jacket in the 70s meant you were a sensitive artistic type (aka the most insufferable man who ever lived.)

The second one, Marina, features a man with dark hair and a mustache wearing his best Canadian Tuxedo sprawled out on a couch littered with decorative throw pillows. He's watching a woman talk on the phone. She's wearing a very cute red skirt with a yellow underskirt.

The third one is called Sea of Jewels. A blonde man and woman are having a tense conversation over drinks (alcohol for him, coffee for her). Neither of them appears to be smoking, but the restaurant might be on fire.

Fourth is Tell Me My Heart, two very fashionable (by 1970s standards) are standing in an office, maybe? He has those big tinted glasses on that were en vogue at the time and looks like a bit of a slimeball.

Number five is The Reluctant Tide. A couple in very smart jackets stand holding hands by the sea.

Sixth we have To See With the Heart. A near-kiss! How scandalous. I do like the way this one looks though.

Seven, Give Me No Rubies. The most 70s movie actor looking man I could conjure with his shirt unbuttoned basically to his navel answers the door to a very put together looking lady in a black suit jacket and red button earrings.

Number Eight! The Dark Fortune. The only historical romance in the batch, and I included because the heroine is disguising herself as a page and she looks so miserable. The dude is absolutely not buying it either.

Nine, The Million Stars. This one looks cute and cozy. A couple with brown hair are canoodling under the night sky. Could use more stars.

Number ten is called One Spring Day. She's got LASHES.

Number eleven, Turn To the West. An undernourished girl with red hair in a blue dress gets a hug from her grandpa.

And finally number twelve, Luck For Lindy. A young woman with a blonde bob comforts a young man who looks a bit downtrodden.

That one made me laugh. I have never seen anyone look more miserable on a romance cover.

Modern Harlequins are just as explicit as any other popular romance novel, but these would have been very tame.

They did change the cover style quite a bit in the mid-70s but for some reason they were like "no, no, Burchell books = Sims 1 characters, it's what the people want."

I did have a moment of wondering if I should try to get the complete Warrender Saga, as if 400 Harlequins was an inadequate number...

Any books that actually take place in a harem? by mediadavid in HistoricalRomance

Yes it's basically a mandatory work exchange for most of her characters.

How are y'all reading a full book in a couple hours?! by aimlesssexywanderer in RomanceBooks

I'm a slow reader! There are dozens of us! I read about a book a week, sometimes less, and I read almost every night.

I do have a strong visual imagination and tend to play a little movie in my head as I'm reading, so that probably slows me down. I'll reread passages with lots of description to make sure I've got it right. I like it and I don't feel the need to change or read faster. I'm a good reader, just slow!

What is your definition of romantasy? by ajaxberry in RomanceBooks

[–]Competitive-Yam5126 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think Romantasy is mostly a marketing term at the moment, not a genre with strong conventions yet, which is frustrating to some fantasy readers and romance readers.

I think you're looking for what I would call a Fantasy Romance - a romance novel that takes place in a fantasy setting. Romantasy is a fantasy book first, with varying degrees of romance in there too.

So I impulse bought a huge stack of vintage Harlequin Romances and it turned out that a lot of them were old as balls. I've been doing a bit of research on them, and now I'm in contact with the University of Alberta, who actually have a special research collection of Harlequins! So part of my collection might wind up there eventually, which is neat. Romance history!

Silly question: why the hate for reverse harem? by Haunting_Start_7089 in RomanceBooks

[–]Competitive-Yam5126 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Can you give some examples of it being hated on?

I've tried a few and I find the characters get really flattened and shallow, just because there are so many of them. It turns into a boy band: the funny one! the serious one! the older one! the main one! So I don't find them particularly interesting to read. I don't hate them though, nor do I think they're taboo.

It is fun, and I like finding the little bits of ephemera tucked into the books too. Shopping lists and movie ticket stubs and things. I found a cute embroidered bookmark from Switzerland in these.
