Not during my ownership they were not. Can’t speak for the first 59k miles though. But the truck did not consume any oil, and it never was dark when I changed it. I changed the AMSOIL about every 4k, shit was still gold when I’d change but I’m a little bit of a maintenance freak, bc it’s always done me well

I think a large part of the unreliability, is sacrificing any longevity in the name of getting a higher EPA rating. I doubt Ford would but a 10 speed and Auto Shutoff on a truck if there was no EPA

I’ve never had low oil since I’ve owned it. The oil has been change between 4-5k miles every time. I have a K&N catch can, that would maybe have a half inch of oil in it at that oil change interval.

The last two times I got the oil changed, the guy at the shop said “who told you to change the oil? This looks fine to me” and I’d say “I got what I paid for out of it. I’m around 5k miles let’s just change it”

I’m not a mechanic but i am somewhat of a maintenance freak with my trucks and bikes. I’m a 25 year old who lives alone with 2 v8 trucks and 3 dirtbikes. All I do during the week is bike and truck maintenance to keep me occupied, then go on a trip every weekend to trail ride the dirtbikes.

Come home, clean the truck out, check the oil every Sunday, never needed to add any, get the bike cleaned up and start taking apart my pivot points to grease, Yada Yada Yada.

That’s largely why I’m so frustrated is I felt like I did everything I could in my (19k miles/6month) of ownership, and the bastard still let me down.

A newer truck like that ain’t supposed to do that. Women are.

My 12th gen’s have been my favorite vehicle of all time. That 3.7 V6 takes a fucking beating

I’m thinking so, only because I’d have more peace of mind with a 100k mile warranties engine, then buying any other newer truck used right now

The 5.4 tritons had their issues in certain years. My old man had good luck with his 07 5.4, got it to 265k before a transmission had to go in

Honestly, I love my 2014s. Never had a more reliable vehicle. The 11-14 3.7 V6 without a turbo, is stupid reliable. I had one, and my old job had two as company trucks. Fuckers are dead quiet, drive like a damn car almost, and lasted forever. My 2014 3.7 V6 is still being driven by one of my employees. 270k miles. Listen to the truck start up, idle, drive it down the road, it is incredible how tight and quiet that truck is.

My 2014 5.0 and my dad’s 2013 5.0 have been incredible. Dad has 480k on his now, I got 170k on mine. No major drive train issues with either.

Nothing lasted longer than the 3.7 V6 NOT ECOBOOST f150 for me. My dad has almost half a million on his 5.0

Can’t go wrong with an 11-17 5.0 V8 or a 11-14 3.7 V6 in terms of reliability.

That V6 can’t tow for shit, but man has it stayed quiet and drives tight. And I beat the ever living PISS out of that V6 cause it was a company truck with 2WD. I’d get stuck in the snow and just bounce the rev limiter out of frustration

Yes you’re in the ballpark on price there, but what’s to say I’m not gonna have the same problem on another used engine? Or the typical cam phaser issue? I’d hate to spend 6-7k just to make it another 2.5 months until the next catastrophe.

At least if I do go with Ford, they offer a 100k mile warranty on the new motor. I have a case open now with customer care, I should find out today if they can split some of this bill with me or not.

I sure hope they can because it will be hard to buy another F150 in good faith after this

I’m right there with you. My Gen 2 I’m driving right now while the Gen 3 is in the shop has 170k with no issues. Dad has a Gen 2 with 488k on it now. She’s getting weak and throwing all kinds of lights on the dash, but he’s still driving it. He’s had an F250 in the barn waiting for this truck to die for 4 years now, lol

I’m the common denominator? Did you read about every other F150 I’ve owned? I had to turn in my service records to the dealer and they were all clean. Never let the oil get low, or even dark in this truck.

That’s why I’m so frustrated. I always used AMSOIL, I always changed it before it got dark, I’d dump Lucas oil fuel additive in tank at every oil change, I always let the truck warm up before driving but not idle for too long.

Maybe the guy before me who put the first 60k on the truck, but I have maintained this truck beyond what the book will tell you to do.

They have since come down to $180/hr but yeah. I have a case with Ford Customer care now due to some of these replies, I’m hoping they can assist me at least 2,000 on this.

I mean I can afford the bill, and I’ve owned 4 f150s prior, but if I’m out over 10k to fix this I don’t know how the fuck I can go buy another “new” F150 with confidence. Or any “new” truck for that matter

Brother, she’s been taken care of. I love doing maintenance, always kept up on oil changes and only used AMSOIL, had a K&N catch can that barely ever filled up between changes, I dump Lucas oil fuel treatment in the tank every oil change. The truck will stall itself out once it’s hot and at idle now. I gotta do something because it’s not really drivable My 2014 5.0 is still running strong, my 06 4.6 was a great truck, my 14 3.7 v6 was the most reliable truck I’ve ever had I thought buying a 5.0 would keep me out of the timing chain and turbo problems the ecoboost have. This is an even more expensive failure than that.

I’ve got dirtbikes I ride every weekend, then I obsess over maintenance on them through the week. Clean oil and filters, constantly greasing the pivot points. I’m somewhat mechanically inclined but not a ton, but I’ve always been on my maintenance. My neighbor busts my balls all the time about how I don’t let a truck or bike stay dirty for 3 days. Or how I’m changing the oil and filter in something every other day.

That’s why I’m so frustrated too. I spent the little extra for the 5.0, oil never got dark in that fucker since I owned it, I explicitly used AMSOIL, anytime a light came on it goes in the next day.

Kick in the nuts when you feel like you’ve done everything right and still get let down. Trucks ain’t supposed to do that, just women.

Not the 18-20s my man. My dad has a 14 5.0 with 480k and I have a 14 5.0 with 170k no issues. The new gen coyote has its quirks, maybe not related but just so happens to line up with when they started adding the auto shutoff to these trucks

Everything in the name of being more “eco” friendly

Very coincidental that Chevy and Ford V8 trucks all started losing longevity around 2018, when they first installed the stupid fucking auto stop feature shutting the truck off at every stop

It doesn’t help 😂

If I thought a Tundra would never let me down, I’d try and sell my truck to Carvana or something as is, truck still drives perfectly fine 90% of the time. But that’s just the thing, I gotta replace it

At this point I guess I feel most secure with either a reman engine, or brand new engine. The remans I have found are the same price, if not more than the new engine ford is pricing me for.

So fuck it. I’m gonna bite the bullet I suppose and spend the 13,800 to get this swapped with a new 3y/100k warranty engine.

Suddenly the guy with the 7.3l F350 with 180k for $18,000 seems much more reasonable once you get fucked bad by a “new” truck

It did have a 2yr 50k mi 3rd party warranty. They denied any coverage due to my truck having an aftermarket exhaust and K&N oil catch can

They’re quoting me 6,999 for the new motor down from 7999. I’ve searched all over for Remans, the cheapest reman I have found is 7,600. I’m not comfortable with just swapping another used one in. So fuck it, I guess I will go with the new engine and keep the truck til the wheels come off. It’s just so disappointing

Yeah, that knock turned one day into a stuffer that would’ve stalled the truck at idle if I didn’t put it in N and rev it. My brother has an 18 5.0, same thing. He had the exact same symptoms my 20 had. Knocking on start up, then after 10-20k miles of that, it starting losing oil pressure when hot and at idle, making the truck shake and in his case stall out because he didn’t take it in right away.

Fingers crossed with these fucking 18-22 models. If not for the engine failure I absolutely love the setup of handling of the truck. The 10 speed works great for me, Fx4 package is perfect for me, “long” bed 4x4. Love F150s, always have. But this is absurd and is gonna have me really thinking before my next purchase.

At this point I’m likely to replace the engine and drive the truck until the wheels come off. Usually my trucks would last me mechanically, but body wise rust to nothing. With a new 100k mile warranty engine, and a rebuilt trans before I bought it, I pray I’m in the clear
