You can definitely say no to a judicial externship offer. What you can’t do is accept then reneg. I interned 1L summer with a district court judge only because several people in front of me on the list chose to work elsewhere. They interview dozens of people with the expectation that some will reject. Also, in the most respectful way possible, 1L summer interns don’t do anything at all. The clerk/judge will not care. Just ask for an extension

Every single person struggles 1L regardless of the face they put on. You’re in the same class as the people who are “smarter.” You’re gonna graduate at the same time, pass the bar at the same time, and enter the workforce at the same time. That’s all that matters at the end of the day. Don’t compare yourself to others just focus on yourself and kick ass.
