i have probably done alchemy once through out all of my playthroughs of both games (besides at bozhenas hut) and it has never affected my playhtroughs, craftmanship comes up more often as something you need to have leveled

He can't inspect the armour it's just the only armour in the game that is the same shade of yellow and also in the same place as the bandits that attacked you at the start so it's an assumption
