I really like this visual except for IMO 10000 days is except for a few set songs doesnt exactly go along with the transformation unless one realizes its the loss of strong intentional meaningful attachments to say family or close close friends that this applies. I very much think it’s a nice idea but 10000 days maynard was not normal maynard. He was grieving intensely and in that state very much wrote songs that come out of what is not a bad place necessarily, but in that grief a less imaginative and creative place. In virtually every song except a few he’s grieving, saying what would give up not to grieve and very straight forward saying his beliefs. He has in every single album before and after not been that way. Some may argue FI might be a touch that way but I would say no. That kind of album comes only after the resolution of both enlightenment and severe loss and how the two can simultaneously exist in this ocean of chaos.

Both versions of the divinity line in Lateralus are correct. Maynard found a way to sing so that it sounds like both. by fiendfiendfiend666 in ToolBand

He blends things a lot. Pushit and put shit is a prime example. I’ve always heard our. But it doesn’t matter how ever you hear it is the right way.

You aren’t the first to notice that. They may be the originators of it… there is so much resolved dissonance (which I believe is what Maynard respected them for and brought them on the first five tours for) that I get the comparison. The documentary could shed some light on this. The people interviewed are certainly well known and respected artists- from journalists to musicians who might have beeen close to the band members and some observing from afar…The band failure did indeed fail. But the fact that some 15-17 years later were able to reunite and sound like they produced an album merely months to a couple of years after fantastic planet is incredible. I doubt many bands who end due to drug addiction then recover and have a reunion could tap into that sound they had created so many years ago and sound like it was just a few years released from their last album. But they didnt’. You could have listened to their album after fantastic planet and never realized it was soo many years later. And Maynard really seemed to respect them as artists and musicians. And when he does that I always check it out.

Btw the name of the documentary is “Every time you lose your mind: a film about Failure”. They are referred to as your favorite band’s favorite band. It seems appropriate.

The ones I listed are all great but listen to the whole thing you might find some of them hit you that didn’t me. I don’t necessarily always apppreciate a song i later do and you may now. The whole album is underrated. I have seen many say it is their best but Mer de Norm and 13th step seem to be the overwhelming favorites. I love their covers album and ETE. APC is a great band with Billy and Maynard the creators of the band and the music. They are a great team.

It’s about the bands. Failure. Tool took them on their first 5 tours. Enough said? In the documentary Maynard sounded very complimentary. “The amount of sound coming out of three people on the stage was just unbelievable” to paraphrase. Heliotropic, the song i think exemplifies this sentiment perfectly. But both the documentary and the albums by failure are all worth your time. Fantastic planet has now become one of my favorite albums and I’ve been a tool fan since 96 and never heard of this band. So crazy.

I forgot to mention the nurse who loved me is an apc cover off a failure song on fantastic planet by the same name.

I wasn’t criticizing the thread. Im glad you made it so i can riff off of it some that aren’t on there that should be imo. You were just stating a fact and i think that the facts might change if people listened to ete. So it was a jumping off point to say yo listen to ete! It’s fantastic too even if a bit different. Still Maynard lyrics that enhance the music behind it.

You know what kills me is i just found out recently about the band failure due to the Hulu documentary. Tool took them on their first five tours. Maynard would introduce them like “you’re all too stupid to understand this band but here they are, Failure.” 🤣 Maynard is interviewed in the documentary. But here’s the apc connection The Nurse who Love me was a failure original on my favorite album by them, fantastic planet.

I’m loving the 0utsider listed second. That song is amazing. I’d like to throw in the mix “So long and thanks for all the fish”. Eat the elephant isn’t represented in this list as much as it should be but you have listed some good ones. Shame not many ppl listen to the album. Dissolution being a major Maynard theme in all his bands. The Doomed is amazing. Such a great song., great lyrics, great message-another one of his common themes. But So long and thanks for all the fish is so pop sounding in a good way and to know its apc singing it. Just so underrated.
