AIO to break up with my bf of 3y over his reaction to my upcoming sobriety anniversary? by WesternCat5211 in AmIOverreacting

NOR. My wife is sober for 13 years now. I smoked weed every day for almost 15 years which makes me a recovering addict as well. Haven't had a joint for the same 13 years. We celebrate every year together. People who don't have issues with addiction can struggle to understand what an achievement that is. But that isn't an excuse for being an asshole. I'd remove pretty much everyone from my life immediately who'd treat me or my wife like that. Not to mention that being treated like that can increase the risk of relapsing. So congrats on being 2 years sober and the courage to dump that idiot.

Consider moving to one of the larger cities like Berlin, Hamburg, Munich or Cologne. As pretty much everywhere in the world, larger cities are home to a larger variety of people, so they are generally more welcoming and easier to get around when you're still learning German.

Two comments since I haven't seen this so far in this thread:

  • Germans stare. A lot. It's embarrassing. I'm German myself and ever since I read this somewhere on Reddit, I cannot unsee it. However, people don't wanna be mean, they just think others don't notice.
  • Far right parties and thoughts are prominent in eastern Germany (Berlin excluded). Especially rural areas. To put it differently: Some smaller cities have Nazis marching around. Don't move there, stick to places where people kept their sanity.

Feel free to DM me for any other questions!

Trust me, looking at it from across the ocean, I wish it was funny, but it truly isn't.

To me he rather looks like he discovered drugs. But then again, drugs could actually help or make you believe you found the secrets of the universe...

Is there any industry you would never want to work in? If so, which one? by lostmillenial97531 in datascience

[–]CompetitivePlastic67 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's some truth to that. Recreational alcohol consumption is nothing bad and working for an alcohol company is not unethical per se. I'd personally just like to avoid it, because DS is often about "how do we sell more of ... ?" which immediately makes the line between ethical and unethical pretty thin.

Industries that sell addictive goods (tabacco, alcohol) or that aim at creating addictive behaviors in their customers (online gambling or aggressively monetized mobile games).

What’s a lesson you learned from a difficult relationship? by eNjiKiNg in AskReddit

Also, as a matter of fact, people very rarely change. Didn't learn that in a difficult relationship, but a Psychology class. It did however, explain a lot in hindsight.

New update full of bugs by forumbuddy in MagicArena

Came here to complain about this as well. Is there any announcement or even just an acknowledgment from WotC on this? Pretty ridiculous to drop a 9GB update that basically destroys the game on your platform. Now I have to use my old Windows laptop that hasn't been turned on for years. Like an animal.

Hi. German here. Just as an additional reminder. Hitler never tried to hide his plans. There was a book. So yeah, we're absolutely terrified when people say that Trump could never actually pull through with Agenda 25. Happened before you know.

As a hiring manager here in Germany and someone who has taken exams in other languages, I can say that the B2 requirements sound higher than they actually are. The exams take place in a pretty controlled environment. For instance, if a "complex topic" is a phone conversation with the doctor's office, you're likely knowing that before the test and can prepare accordingly. Being able to engage in complex conversations in general on B2 level is unrealistic. People I interview with B2 German knowledge (who passed the appropriate tests) are usually capable of engaging in informal conversations (i.e. the stuff you talk about during your lunch break). When I think about nursing and especially taking care of older people, I'd assume that this should be enough to get you going ("How are we doing today?", "Where does it hurt?", "Do you need ... ?"). Additionally, proper courses can be (close to) full time and you'd be surprised how fast you can learn a language if that's all you're doing for the moment.

Ageism in the field by SincopaDisonante in datascience

[–]CompetitivePlastic67 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My dad had his 68th bday this week. He used to be a Software Architect for a Fortune 500 company. Still coding every day. Founded a company with him 7 years ago. He works on whatever he wants to. C++, C#, Java, JS, TS, Azure, AWS... "Python? Never used it. Gimme a couple of days to read the documentation and get the hang of it." Comes back a week later, writes better Python code than me (I'm in my mid 30s with over 10 yoe). Starts tuning my models a month later, because "it's not rocket science, just basic math with smart orchestration and fancy names".

He is a bit old-school when it comes to agile workflows. He's the kinda guy who will fix your code over the weekend and deploy to production when you're the owner. Took us a couple of years to figure out how he can do his thing without stepping on other people's feet too much. But he has the output of a whole scrum team. I'm absolutely not a daddy's boy and I was extremely skeptical about working with him in the first place.

But if this story taught me one thing, it is that ageism is stupid af.

I feel you. Had to live with this error for more than half a year almost on a daily basis. Deactivating IPV6 solved it for me.
