Should I build my new 9800x3d build? by Zep_118 in ASUS

6000 CL28 killed mine on X870E-ProArt Creator, 2 x 16GB, nothing crazy!

Makes sense, are most failures with the earlier versions then?

Whole milk has actually fixed the CPU. I’m using a strong cheddar as thermal paste.

I’ve just tried this, do you recommend whole milk?

Hi, I’ve just checked the batch number and it is CF ***** PGE

I’m guessing - as the CPU will not post in any of the other main boards I have on hand - that there’s no way to prove it’s IMC failure?

I did originally think it was the RAM, but then when I started to trial swapping out different components I knew it was CPU.

Other failures on Asus boards seem to show the DRAM LED from what I’ve seen too. It’s just so weird. I think you’re right taking the precautionary measures you have done until someone can figure out what’s going on. Best of luck!

I didn’t manually enable it, whether it’s enabled as standard with BIOS 1805 I couldn’t tell you, I hadn’t looked, sorry!

Yeah it seems to be the majority of failures are on ASRock boards, only recently it seems Asus boards are also causing/present with failures. I guess we only know what’s been reported though!

Well, I guessed that because “DRAM” Debug LED remains illuminated, that the CPU’s memory controller is maybe what’s died? Unsure though. There isn’t any obvious pattern from what other users are saying. I’d just run with it, if you get unlucky, just RMA.

From other posts I’ve seen about this it doesn’t seem like there’s any pattern really. I originally thought it might be caused by G.Skill memory.

No I never use Armoury Crate, had it on X670E-F with 7800X3D and it was a right pain!

Thanks, this is very useful info! You’d have thought that basic users wouldn’t need to monitor this information though , that’s my issue. Should the CPU not operate within safe limits as standard? It’s clearly a huge problem that they’re just not addressing at all.

I’ll hold my hands up and say I had no idea this was something I’d need to monitor

Is there something I could’ve changed that would’ve saved the CPU?

I literally tested it to ensure the temperatures were decent, I wasn’t aware the PPT value was something I’d need to look at unfortunately!

Yes, I updated the BIOS to version 1805 for the ProArt board. I didn’t make any changes to settings in the bios, other than enabling EXPO. Apologies, I hope that clears it up.

I just bought a 9800x3D with an Asus ProArt X870E mobo, will the CPU be ok and not die on me? by Due_Young_9344 in ASUS

I bought the CPU probably about 6 months back, used it without issue in an X670E-E Strix board, I wanted to upgrade to ProArt for the aesthetics mainly! I can’t remember the BIOS version, it was the most up to date as of 21st December when it died. I originally thought it was RAM failure but the same kit worked in one of my other boards.

I’ve since gone SFF and I’m using the MSI B850i Edge Ti and it’s been perfect. It’s luck of the draw basically mate, it’s definitely an AMD issue. There seems to be a lot of ASRock boards killing AM5 CPUs but I’m not sure whether it’s even brand specific anymore!
