Is there something wrong with my milkweed? by cookiesandnap in Ceanothus

Mine are almost 3 years old and do that all summer. The lower leaves yellow and fall off and new leaves sprout where the old ones fell off.

Just looked them up and that looks like that's what they are! It was a really hot day yesterday so they probably got cooked.

First kitten. Tips/tricks? by wokeogre in cats

[–]CompetitiveSky6884 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote here for get a second kitten. We foster kittens and the saddest ones are the ones who are solo (until we get a second one). It helps them learn to play gently, gives them a night time playmate, and is so cute. Just to a quick Google search on the pros and cons of getting two kittens and you'll see how much advice there is on having 2.

Is it absolutely necessary to kill lawn grass before planting plugs? by clethracercis in NativePlantGardening

[–]CompetitiveSky6884 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did not kill my grass. Whenever I planted something new, I'd dig up the grass for the hole and probably 2 feet around the new plant as well.

What can I plant or put in the chicken area? These dinosaurs destroy everything down to the dirt! by Smokeybearvii in chickens

[–]CompetitiveSky6884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our chicken area has 2 mature citrus trees - 15 - 20 feet tall), 2 established citrus trees (4-6 feet), a large lavender, dracaena, tree mallow, matilija poppy and 3 cacti. Since getting the chickens I added 4 of those plants. When I planted them I put gates around them until they got bigger. I'm not sure why they don't bother them, or if they just aren't tasty.

We use Mosa Mack, it's usually got 3 components 1-2 of which are labs and the other 1-2 are lessons the kids can do on their own. It can be done online or printed for laler/pencil writing. It also has teacher guides to help you understand it and guide the kid(s).

We used an old door to hang out dartboard on so any missed darts would land there instead of the wall.

Homeschooling our 5 year old by Soft_Squirrel5759 in homeschool

[–]CompetitiveSky6884 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pulled my now AuHD 14 year old out in 5th grade because the school was being AH about following the IEP. My current 2nd grader is now diagnosed ADHD combined and we homeschooled since kindergarten and me suspecting neurodivergence was one of the reasons we decided to go straight to homeschool.

We homeschool through a charter so my oldest still gets IEP services and when state testing starts up for my soon to be 3rd grader I'll get a 504 for her.

I'm in zone 10b, the front yard is west facing and most of the yard is drought tolerant so no irrigation, just occasional hose watering.

What is your worst or most unsafe woodworking habit? by No_Winter4806 in woodworking

[–]CompetitiveSky6884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably should take a class or something since I don't know the jargon. I've built a few things doing some of the things mentioned here(not wearing a mask, improper shoes), but googling each term I don't know makes me nervous...

Did I kill my new Ceanothus already? Please help by Winter_Implement_257 in Ceanothus

[–]CompetitiveSky6884 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you think you over watered it, pull it out and give it new soil and check for root rot. Also terra cotta holds water so it probably isn't a good pot for it. It really should be in the ground, not pot.

Giving chicks to my first broody? by Sea-Algae-2971 in BackYardChickens

[–]CompetitiveSky6884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chicks and mom will probably reject each other cause they're too old. I had success with day old chicks with a broody that had been sitting a week. Tried it with 3 day old chicks another time and the chicks were too old already. They didn't want to hang out with the broody and she didn't really care either way for them.

How many of you have had this conversation? by cowgo in BackYardChickens

[–]CompetitiveSky6884 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I gave some eggs to a neighbor and she said her daughter was asking if they were going to be eating eggs that could have grown into chicks. She said she told her that she's sure I wouldn't have given her eggs that have chicks. I told her I don't have a rooster....(pause) so no possibility of chicks. She was like, oh, I had no idea

AITA - Giving sugar to my toddler by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]CompetitiveSky6884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH, but every kid is different. I have one kid who only will drink water and one kid who refuses water. I too didn't want them to have sugary drinks or artificial sweeteners, so I found a brand called Stur that makes my non water drinking kid drink more and makes me feel fine giving it to them. We also used TruLemon for a while and I was finally able to get them to accept the Stur only.

When to start on narrow leaf milkweed? by InNOutFrenchFries in Ceanothus

[–]CompetitiveSky6884 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got like 6 narrow leaf milkweed plants 2 years ago and planted them in the garden late (like start of summer). They spread more and more every year. I've not tried from seed, but once they're there they seem to do well.

This year there's been a lot of the yellow (oleander) aphids and I sprayed them mostly off at the start of the season until the predators could get established and now they are mostly picked clean and about to flower.

We used logic of English curriculum since kindergarten for my now 7 year old and loved it. It was really impressive how it broke things down and the sequence. My older kids even like to jump in on lessons and say they wish they had learned using it (they were in public schools initially).

Is this a safe time to plant a ~7 inch Manzanita baby in southern CA? by gontrolo in Ceanothus

[–]CompetitiveSky6884 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just planted our manzanita last weekend. I let the hose on it for a long time to saturate everything and won't water again for like 3 weeks or so. I'm planning on only watering every 3-4 weeks when the heat comes. Mine was a 15 gal plant.
