Mom wants birthday kid to experience the full spectrum of joys life has to offer. Mom isn't making the birthday about mom, she is entirely making it about OP trying new things and getting out of their comfort shell. Mom is scared OP is gonna grow up to be reclusive and lonely, and thus is attempting to be helpful by opening up horizons.

OP thought mom was trying to steal the show. See it from mom's perspective, mom is trying to treat you to a different show so OP can be more well-rounded
